Clean install, a few Questions.

    Hey all.

I'm planning on doing a clean install sometime over the next week or so and I would appreciate a little help.

I have a MacBook with tiger install CD's that I got with it. Could someone just confirm that these are full copies of Tiger and not recovery disks. Like, if I format my HD, could I install Tiger with these Disks.

Also, I'm getting a 500GB HD and I was just wondering how I would go about making a full HD clone just incase something goes wrong. I mean just make a copy of what I have now just to have.

What will come of my Windows Partition? I have a 20 GB Windows partition and tbh, I have no need for it now. If I format the hard drive it'll be gone too, yeah?

I'm sure I'll think of more questions so make a start on answering these :D

The install disc is a full copy of Tiger so no worries there!

Making a copy of what you have is easy enough. Carbon copy cloner is what I use. Cant really fault it.

If you format the whole HD, yes you windows partition will go. You will be given the option to chose which partition to install Tiger. From there you can chose to delete you windows partition and use the whole HD for Tiger.

    Hope this helps!

correct me if i'm wrong but i believe that any discs you get with a machine are recovery discs and not full retail install discs.

granted they will give you a clean install, but they are specific to your model

AFAIK the disc you get is specific to the model of the computer. i.e. an install disc ship with a macbook would work on any macbook, but not on an iMac or a Mac Book Pro.. etc.

Therefore for a clean install like the op wants to there is no problem!

Full copy, but not the retail version. And specific to the type of Mac, unless you're really lucky like my niece who got a MacBook with the Tiger installation disks AND a full Leopard DVD as well. This definitely would have installed on my Mini, only I didn't have a licence for it......

Gah! Carbon Copy Cloner seems to be what I want but I don't think that it allows backups to USB drives from som reason. Well, from what I can see, I can't :(

    Any alternatives if I can't?

It turns out that there is an option to backup the original HD to an external HD already in Disc Utilities. There is no real need for other applications. Although, if you wanted it fto be scheduled then I guess CCC is the way to go.

    I follwed this walkthrough btw.

I'm sure Tiger will work if you get a copy but if the machine originally came with Panther then I doubt it will have the minimum requirements for Leopard or whether it'll run it well.

cool thanks for the reply. its a g4 1.3ghz 256 ram so its not exactly flying but i think tiger would work fine. now, off to adverts.ie i go! also, is it easiest to just insert the disk and let it wipe everything, instead of deleting stuff before hand? also, if i do install tiger will it allow me to put a new user name on the laptop. im giving it to a family member and he'd appreciate it i think!

You could format everything and start completely from scratch. (like the first time you turned on your Powerbook if you want) Google how to do that though as I'm not 100% sure.

The G4 can access up to 1GB of RAM. This type of RAM (DDR SDRAM) is fairly cheap so upgrading that would make it compatible with Leopard.

For a clean install just hold down C to boot from the Tiger install disk then select Erase & Install from the installer options.

It's that simple?! I thought there was a bit more to it than that. I planned on doing this tonight aswell. :)

How did you get on Im...Lost? Should have the tiger discs by the end of the week so hoping to do a clean install then!

    It went fine. No problems.

I just popped in the install CD. Then I found it in finder and clicked on the install button. The comp then restarted with "boot from CD" enabled". This saves having to press C at startup.

However, my Windows partition is still here but I'm not too fussed either way to be honest. Erase and install only did so on the Mac partition apparently.
