I'm looking for a bit of help in getting setup for home recording and was looking for advice and a few answers to some questions. Any info would be great.

    - I'll be looking to record an electric guitar, an acoustic guitar, a bass and maybe some vocals.

    - I've got a Dell Vostro laptop - Windows Vista, 2ghz dual core, 3 gb ram. Its an onboard sound card as far as I know...

    - I'll only be recording in my room so I don't wana spend a huge amount of cash.

The first thing on my list in an audio interface. I was looking at tonelab, the emu 0202, the mackie onyx satalite etc but if I'm being honest I haven't a clue whats good and whats not. I don't need multiple inputs for instruments as I'll be doing solo work. Budget for the audio interface is somewhere in the region of 130 euro give or take.

I also want to get some monitors, again budget is quite low, 130 give or take. I have a great set of headphones so this isn't really a priorty.

Can someone suggest something that will suit my needs? Also if theres anything else I will need to get setup let me know.

    Thanks,
    Krsnik

    The Mackie Onyx anyway...

Though you are going to have to find a product that ships with some software, you're not going to get far here with hooky software. They are a bit funny about that here, and rightly so...

Speakers for €130? I dunno, M-Audio BX somethings?

Hooky software? I already have traktion and guitar rig which I think is all i need for the moment?

Anyway do you know if the onyx works with vista and guitar rig? The m-audio bx speakers are a little out of my price range (€300 on thomann), is that the least I should be spending on speakers?

Here if you already have a really good pair of headphones leave the monitors out for the moment.

I had this and never had any problems, it was a brilliant piece of kit.

I think you might be really pushing it with the budget though and I use a Mac so can;t really help you with software.

i have an onyx satellite and its fantastic. i use windows XP and guitar rig works really well with it. although ive only tried the demo.
tracktion is really good to start with, its missing some of the features of pro level software but has more than enough for my needs, which are similar to your own.
recording the acoustic is a different story. i use a rode nt1a for acoustic guitar and vocals and its a great mic. a lovely warm sound lots of other mics ive tried dont have.
dunno about vista compatibility, id personally just uninstall it and put xp on my DAW. less resource hungry and drivers aplenty.

Can't speak for the 0202 but I formerly used an EMU 1616 and found it to be an excellent package for the price. They seem to make fairly solid gear.

For 130 quid you would kick the sh1t out of my setup. I like to think that i get a good quality sound out of what i do at home and im using a bog standard PC mic which is placed around difference areas of my guitar (for bass/treble). My bass goes into the pc direct, and if i do record electric guitar ill find the sweet spot and sort the sound to my liking.

You start to learn how yourset up works. I do alot of recordings on my own in my free time.. I've found that if i sing with the mic at oclock while i face 12, i get very clear vocals on my mic. I didnt know that in my recording below. This is my first full mix and recording.

If you think thats an alright quality recording, then read the tut i did up a while ago in the stickies for this forum Heres a link to it

I've recently added a cajon to my list of instruments - its really hard to record that with some level of good quality.

    Heres another one

Fast Track Pro all the way man it's a great piece of kit. I use it for gigs now too and haven't had an issue with it at all.
