Hi all...hope someone can throw a bit of advice my way...looking into buying a laptop...willl be using it for web browsing, running potoshop cs3 and playing games...i'll be playing the latest games (like call of duty 4)so i know thats gonna mean big graphics card = €€€€€'s

I have a dell desktop but its pushing on in years now so maybe I'll just put it out to pasture

was looking at the dell xps'....i'd like the 15" screen at least.... what sort of spec should i be loooking at for future proofing it for games

would this one do the job?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270217288347&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=017

or should i be looking at the dell outlet store?

That graphics card is pretty good but it won't be as good as the one in the first post (ram on the graphics card is ddr2 as opposed to ddr3). It's still a great laptop especially at that price.

Thanks AC...i never even spotted that...dell doesnt give me the option to change the graphics card to a better one...well i cant find a way to change it anyway

the dell one would cost €840 delivered...i doubt the one on ebay will go for this cheap...and around €800 is my budget

Yeah they don't offer the ddr3 version on the vostro for some reason. Are you sure the vostro is €840? It's coming out at €750 for me.

    sorry for confusion

so you think thats the best graphics card they'll do with that laptop?

    thanks for reply mate

Definitely upgrade the screen 1280x800 is too low for a 15" in my opinion, 1440x900 is a lot better. Extra battery life is always a good thing but it will increase the weight a bit and I think the 9 cell sticks out a bit on the vostro 1500.

ah sure we all have thinhgs that stick out :p

I'm not too worried about it looking bad cos it'll be plugged in 90% of the time...battery will only be used when i'm mobile, out taking photos.. or maybe sun bathing out the back :p

i wonder is there any coupons around that might get me a few bob off

So do you think this Vostro will be adequate for gaming???

None that I know of. There is a dell laptop deals thread in the bargain alerts forum. Usually if there is a coupon, it'll be found by someone and posted in there.

It will be pretty good but don't expect to be playing crysis maxed out. To get anything better would be very expensive. At least a grand, if not more.
