Help! Random Restarts! :-O

    Hey guys,

My computer has started to restart at seemingly random moments, but it always happens just at the moment of either clicking and pressing a key. For example, on boards.ie, I clicked on a thread title and bam..restart. Or starting Team Fortress 2 - splash screen appears, I press ESC, and it restarts! I'm totally stumped..

    Any ideas?

    Cheers!

Start it in safe mode and do a full virus scan.

Check your PC's Tempetures CPU and Graphics card. This kinda thing can happen of your GFX Card is overheating.

If the above fail, a system restore to before the random restarts might work.

Usually random restarts can only be a few things.

So by process of elimination you should be able to find out what it is.

    1. Drivers ( graphics, sound, motherboard etc etc )
    2. Power supply on its way out
    3. Temps to high ( cpu or gpu )

But i would reccomend now that you make a backup of anything you dont mind loosing, as there is a chance this could happen to you.

Thanks guys. Yeah, CPU is overheating - was full of dust! I cleaned out the dust but it's still doing it! Hope I can finish this post before it cuts out again!

Quick question- how important is the thermal paste when it comes to cooling? The heatsink seemed to be low on it. Could that make all the difference? Also, what's the normal temp for Intel Pentium 4 2.8Ghz (the non-hyperthreading kind)? Looked online, can't find answer.

    cheers
