Introducing a new dog

Our 13yr old boxer was put to sleep last week. We also have another male boxer who will be 3 in July. He is neutered. Yesterday we got a new boxer puppy, female and 5 months old. The problem is that the older boxer is snarling and snapping at her which I found very surprising, thinking that males do not attack females. I wonder has being neutered anything to do with it and what is the best way to approach this? He is normally such a placid slob who couldn't be bothered to bark at anyone.:confused:
