    Hi all,
I've noticed 2 cables placed accross the road either side of villages, along the N4 from Mullingar to Rooskey in the last week, they're connected to a box, chained to a signpost. Are they traffic counting or speed detectors to find the most suitable areas for speed cameras?

This thought struck me also, just this morning - great minds think alike ;)

I can't remember a road census on this scale before. The cynical side of me guesses they're surveying traffic volumes to select locations that will maximise camera revenue.

The naive side of me reasons that it could be something to do with the forthcoming dual carriageway between Mullingar and Longford.
However, the surveys seem to be ongoing around Longford town aswell, in areas unaffected by the dual carriageway - e.g. Park Road - Ballymahon Road, unusual 60km/h limit.

Can we find out if a large-scale road census is underway elsewhere in the country?

    Traffic counters.

Lights, pedestrian crossings etc. are allocated depending on volume. Perhaps local residents are requesting a crossing so a survey has to be done to ensure traffic volumes warrant it.

Would like to think that WA but these continue all the way from the Mullingar bypass to Longford, at intervals of a few miles.
According to OP they are also present beyond Longford heading to Sligo

    Definitly traffic counters.

I wonder can they distinguish between two cars and a large lorry with many axles

As a follow on for the above thread, can anyone tell me now what exactly are the new "windmill & solar panel" masts that have sprung up all over the place on the side of the roads? Do they record volumes of traffic etc? I have also noticed stand alone white poles with little white peaked caps on them. What are they for? Sorry if it has been asked before
