Speaking on RTE radio earlier today the Herald editor announced that they will launch a website in the next two months. Is this an attempt to cling onto a dwindling readership?

Only thing i like about Hearld is their local info and especially the crime/court section :D

Now if they like other Indo titles leave their stupid uneducated columnists, the sensationalism and harping on about certain models out, it wouldn't be asking too much.

It is 2008 and a newspaper is talking about lauching a website in a couple of months time! Have they just sleepwalked through the last decade or something?

    don't they already have a website independent.ie

the usefullness of the herald is that it is evening newspaper, so you can get some of todays news as opposed to the other papers,
there only a handful of local and crime stories not already on the web

And what's worse is that they'll be one of (if not the) first Irish tabloids to have a fully-fledged website (If I remember correctly The Star had a basic online presence but their site is down now anyway.)

I wouldn't see myself reading a Herald website but it's good to see all the same, even though it's about 10 years behind the rest of the world. What are the odds that the site will look almost identical to the re-designed Independent.ie site - given that INM's London newspaper used the exact same template in its online relaunch.

According the the ABC's latest Island of Ireland report - it's down 4.3% year on year for week days and 1.9% for the Saturday edition.

Herald readership has been falling for years, part of an international trend of evening newspaper falls but also partly because it's awful rubbish
