According to the IT editor on Radio 1 at lunchtime they are lookingat the possibility of ending the paid subscription. She also claimed that the online IT was just about breaking even.

An end to the sub would be most welcome.

    It certainly would be.

Since they introduced it, alot of people have gone to the likes of Indo(free reg) or breakingnews.ie for free info. Some of us including moi dont like the Indo but we have no other choice to get local news.

Paying for news online is a tad ridiculous when its freely available elsewhere.

I think that most of the major newspapers are free anyway (Washington Post, NY Times, London Times etc). Perhaps the Deefer Times wants to position itself in such august company. Though going to a PPV model was utterly stupid and smacked of people who really didn't understand the web trying to impose an outdated model on it. Naturally it failed to be a widely popular move and it made the paper's website largely irrelevant for news because you could get news elsewhere. All that was left was the talking head rubbish. The web has largely bypassed the Irish Times to such an extent that it is irrelevant.

Murdoch recently made some noises about making the Wall Street Journal free access. Pehaps Madame thinks she is playing at the same level with the Irish Times' coverage of Irish business. :)

    Regards...jmcc
