Laptop as server

I have an Acer 1.6 Centrino laptop lying around that I'm thinking of using as a media server.

My Buffalo NAS is on its way out and I like to use the laptop to replace it. How safe is it to have a laptop plugged in all the time ? would it make more sense power wise to remove the battery and just have it on mains ?

Seems needless to have the battery in if its going to be pure stationary yes.
