    just a thanks to everyones advice on lenses ..
    I eventually got the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (a beauty)
    they f1.8 50mm mkII prime (canon) and the Canon 70-300 EF ISM f4-5.6

    today i went out shooting with the telephoto and got some great shots
    of birds, the quality is surprisingly good (for me anyway) especially at
    the 200-250 end, gets a little soft at 300 but even still im very happy with it.

    I took some photos with the Tamron, very nice replacement for the kit ..
    good quality too ...

    I'll check the nifty fifty soon ...
