Hard drive failure or is it the motherboard?

My PC just froze up and will not boot anymore. I'm getting an error during the post screen saying "Error loading operating system". I was having problems with the hard drive last week, it kept failing the western digital diagnostics. I did a complete format and re-install and everything seemed fine until it today. This all obviously points to hard drive failure but the strange thing is when I go into the BIOS none of the other sata hard drives are being detected? This makes me think it may actually be a motherboard problem?
I'm running memtest at the moment to rule out memory problems.
    Anyone got any other ideas?

Nah cant see it being a M/B problem. I would disconnect the drive you believe is having the problem and see does the bios pick up the others.

you could try booting up into a live linux CD, see if you can read all of the other drives, maybe leave it on overnight to see if a motherboard issue causes it to fail! does sound like the hard disk, but you know murphys law.. there's always that chance it's both!

Nothing seems consistent about this problem, I left the PC off for about 20 minutes and then when I booted back up all hard drives were showing up in the bios again? It still won't load the OS though. I'm going to root out my ubuntu live cd and see what happens
