Me and a few mates are headin off to Sydney on the 2nd of june for 6 weeks. Where meetin up with a few lads who are already workin over there for a year.
Anyway the plan is drive up the east coast to Cairns within that time frame, so im wondering has anyone else done this before? If so any advice on places to go or interesting areas to stop off along the way would be appreciated, thanks.

P.S where thinkin of hiring a camper van as means of transport, any advice on this to would be appreciated also.

I'm pretty sure that there are a sh!tload of threads with info for this sorts trip if you do a search.

Quickly the three places i would stop are Port Maquerie(about 5hrs North of Sydney, Stradbroke Island (off the coast of Brisbane) and Town of 1770(Between Brisbane and Cairns).
Look them up and get ur ass down to them...

I drove from melbourne to cairns last year, took about 6 weeks so if your heading straight up from sydney you should have plenty of time. like ibh says there is a tonne of info if you do a search.

For campers you might check out http://www.wickedcampers.com.au/

they are the cheapest but the graffiti on the van can make you feel like a gobsh1te!!

I bought a car but thats because i had been living there before hand.

Im from Brisbane, so I know heaps of places that are a must see. Byron Bay (NSW), Nimbon (A small slice of amsterdam in oz) (also NSW). Stay away from the damn goldcoast, too trendy & sh*t!

Must have a look at Moreton Island, there is a barge that you can bring cars over on & you can camp. Be warned, it is a sand island, so your camper might on be up for it. (Off the coast of Brisbane).

    Brisbane of cause!

Frasier Island is another really nice island (North of Brisbane). Lots of dingos (just dont feed them, hehe!).

There are heaps of nice places all along the coast on the way up to cairnes. I think the camper van is a great idea. Take it slow & enjoy the scenery! But be aware of the distances that you will be looking at! It would take over 24 hrs of non-stop driving to get from Brisbane to Cairnes. & make sure that you have air-conditioning!

We drove from Melbourne to Sydney doesn't sound impressive until I say we went clockwise around Oz.

Should be blogs there of us coming down the coast (Cairns -> Sydney). Any questions PM me, or reply to the thread.

The weather will be much nicer in Queensland in June so the further north you go on the east coast the better it will be. Some places I would recommend are Fraiser island, Airle beach, magnetic island, Nimbon, Byron bay. Dont forget to check out Port Douglas, its about 1 hour north of Cairns and will be hopping in June.

My one advise/tip would be get out of sydney as soon as possible when u get there otherwise you could get stuck there. 6 weeks will fly and getting stuck in sydney in the pubs ect as the craic will be so good could very well happen. A few days in the city to see the sights is more than enough. with 6 weeks planned well, you could nearly get a few days in Melbourne in. Much nicer city than sydney. It would take a day to drive there or get a cheep flight as not to waste time maybe. As for east coast byron bay is a must and port douglas - cape tribulation. A few days out on the reef maybe off airlie beach (the whitsundays) on a boat trip is great fun. we liked cairns too. more so than brisbane.
enjoy it. would love to be back there now.
The tourist busses are very well organised and might be an alternative to hiring a van. downside is of course u have to stick to timetables then. but busses are very regular and there are plenty of tours for all major 'things to do'. upside to busses also is everyone can have a drink when ever they want without drink driving worries.
