Should I formally hand in notice?

I have been on fixed term contracts with my employer for 4 years now, and this now ends 31st March. It is expected that I will now sign a permanent contact (which I have not yet received) - however I have absolutely no intention of signing it and plan to leave. All things being equal Would you hand in notice in this situation ?

If my memory serves me correctly once you are employed beyond the four year mark your employment is automatically converted to a contract of indefinite duration regardless of you signing an updated contract or not. I'm open to correction on this.

If I intended leaving I would give notice as I would prefer to leave on good terms. Legally though you could probably just stop working at the end of the fixed term but I'd prefer to be more up-front about it.

Hmm - if that is true than it could be a problem as technically I hit end of year 4 mid-Feb, my last contact over-extended the period by 6 weeks.

Yes, ideally I would like to leave on good terms - just by the fact of leaving that is unlikely - and the way the place works - everything will likely be my fault when I leave anyway . One of the reasons I am leaving is due to health issues related to work place stress - and in one sense I am angry because it was all totally avoidable, and otherwise I don't feel of the mind to have to endure the sh1t hitting the fan for the last remaining weeks if this is known.

Reference wise it is company policy to only issue references stating the candidate worked from date x to date y - which although may be a problem in itself - is not a problem in so far as they won't give a bad one.
