Sky+ box problem.

The box wont come out of the standby mode. I disconnected it from the main power supply for a couple of minutes and booted up again but it still remains in standby mode.

The only thing out of the ordinary that happened today was that we had an unmerciful lightning flash very near and after that I switched all the bits and pieces off for about 20 minutes. Dont know if that would have had anything to do with it or not.

Any ideas folks or any suggestion?

Give Sky a call, tell them your box is broken.

Their standard response will be:- you'll either need to pay for an engineer to go and diagnose / resolve or replace box... and they'll want you to pay for the box if that's what you need.

All you need to say to them is.. if they dont replace the box for FREE, your cancelling your subscription... CANCELLING being the magic word.

    Worked for me, twice.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I only took out a new sub about 6 weeks ago and they did give me a new box but I had a 3 year old sky+ box here and swapped them and got Sky to pair the card with it.

On a side note it was interesting that one of the agents I was talking to told me that I could sell the new box if I wished.

Is it the new Sky+ or the old one that's banjaxed?

If it's the new one, sure it'd be covered under 12 month warranty.

Its the old one byte. I have a new standard box but as I said I swapped them around to get the benefits of the Sky+ features.

I rang sky and did a few things that didnt work and the final thing to do was to download a software update. This was done but still no joy. Called them again and a different guy just told me that the only thing left was to get an engineer to call but it would cost me £65. Not worth I think.

The other thing that happened was that the kid's PS1 is not now working properly. It was also plugged in when we had the lightening so Im putting it down to that.

Failure after cooling down is often a sign of faulty power supply capacitors. Kits are available for the Thomson model.

Had a few sky + boxes do this not so long ago after lighting storms. You could purchase a 2nd hand one or send it to digi-repairs.

You got house insurance, if so claim for both ps and sky + and maybe something else ?

Yeah I think the insurance company will be getting a call in the morning. Any idea as to the cost of a new Sky+ box?

Sorry slightly off topic but but can a PS1 be even bought new these days and if so what price.

Over the counter price for a Sky+ box is €299 IIRC.

As for PS1, hmm, not too sure. You might have to look through the aul' Dealer for one! :)

Ah I thought it was around the 300 mark. The reason I ask is that my insurance company have a "fast track" settlement procedure whereby they will agree a price over the phone (up to a certain limit obviously) so I need to be able to tell them what a new one will cost.

As for the PS Im hopeless with digits ;). A PS console will be enough to tell them. And then check out the Dealer :)
