Toshiba laptop says local only connection over wireless

I was trying to set up the Brothers toshiba laptop last night , they have eircom 1mb broadband using a netopia router , any I set up the router with WPA PSK and all is well there.

I made sure the wireless device was turned on on the laptop , and searched for the wireless connection which it found no problem , I entered the passkey which it accepted and it connected to the router , however it has local only access and cannot connect to the net ?

Running ipconfig , it sees the router with no issues , default gateway is correct and I can even enter router setup from the laptop , no matter what I do though I only get local only access.

The laptop is running Vista , I have turned off UAC , and the firewall but the problem still persists ,

    Anybody got any ideas ?

afraid I dont. I do have similar problems from time to time but resetting the router always cures it.

What else is on the router? Have you tried unplugging the other computers from the router yet? I know a lot of routers will give priority to Ethernet/CAT-5 connections before wireless and this is where I get my problems from.

I am online researching a very similar problem on a Lidl Targa Traveller 1562 X2.

After being through heaps of c... from tech support and various people "knowledgeable" about computers, I have established that the chipset that is responsible for Wifi is made by a company called Ralink Technology, and the installed driver is out of date.

Casting around on the internet, it seems that a lot of wifi chipsets have issues.

And indeed the new driver lists as one of its fixes cures for problems on channel hopping, and problems handling WPA encryption.

So an idiot would think that is the likely solution.
Of course everyone else is blaming Windows, antenna placement etc.
[The antenna placement is a non-issue for me because other wifi devices work perfectly in the exact same location.]

My problem is that Linux-enthusiast Ralink don't support the Windows Update service for drivers. Nor do they make it easy to know which driver is right for your machine. The website is not designed for use by enduser.

So enthusiastic about Linux, they forgot to make it work with Windows Vista. Doh!

I have mailed Targa this afternoon, but I'm not optimistic.
I may just end up getting an adaptor from a grown-up company.

You may have better luck. Do a websearch for problems with the drivers for the wifi chipset.

Do you have Norton Internet Security or McAfee installed?

Is the internet light on the modem green?

Thanks for that Fergal , seems your right on the money there by the looks of things ,

Kaizersoze , good point too , but internet security is not on the laptop , local only works fine but no internet ,

I installed a 3com usb wireless device on it today ( after disabling the internal device ) and it works , so it does indeed look like the internal device or driver for same thats at fault.
