A useful device to manage the transition from analog to digital video/TV in your household – the Neuros OSD (costs under €200). With it you can copy your existing video content to USB hard disks, record TV programmes, view the content either on a PC or TV later, and the kit covers most standards* and connection types. Your old VCR is going to be dead some day – if you have any worthwhile content – including family videos – it is a good time to do a back-up on hard disk!

USB hard drives are getting very cheap with 1 Terrabyte about €300 and 2 Terrabyte drives at around €700.

    DVD recorder €99

I think these are a bit of a toy. Hard drives are not an archive medium.

    Personally, I'd prefer HDD's over DVD-R's.

Toy? You then end up with all these DVDs to store and file away and locate. And DVDs can get scratched and become unreadable. You can easily backup your media hard disk(s) on another disk.

With the Neuros OSD, people can access the content from their PCs across a home network, via a web interface that can catalog the entire collection of media, your €99 DVD recorder (if you can find one at that price?????) won't have an MPEG4 codec which is essential to get good quality from manageable file sizes when converting video tapes to digital format. You can't play a DVD on your mobile phone.... The Neuros is a bridge among all your entertainment systems.
