Hey i have a ibanez grg170dx . Not the best guitar in the world but i have two an esp and my ibanez my esp has a floyd rose so not the best for d tuning when on stage . There has been something wrong with my ibanez pickups and i want to change them . If i was to buy a new set would it just be a case of soldering the wires from the old pickups to the new ones ? has anyone any advice on changing pickups or wiring them ! Any advice would be apriciated

Are you not happy with the tone from your ibanez or is it something more serious?

well the tone compared to the emg's in my esp there is a big difference . but yea there is another problem but to b hones i dont know what it is they are falling in so i think that might be causeing some changes in the sound. Both pickups are falling into the body that can be fixed but when i compare the sound in my esp and my ibanez there is an unreal difference . Ill give ya an example . I have an me-50 i used my ibanez through it and every distortion setting was the same very distorted with my esp every distortion setting is so different and can be identified .

Honestly, the Ibanez stock pickups aren't great at all. I'm certainly a fan of Ibanez, but all of mine have DiMarzio pups. So I would certainly recommend a new set.

As far as wiring in new pickups, it's fairly easy, and there are plenty of guides for it online.

A few different ones, Blaze, Evolution, D-Sonic in bridge, and either the Air Norton or a PAF in neck position.

    Thanks for the link deadskin.

Yea i was thinking about putting in a DiMarzio distortion and a PAF at the neck its the set-up Randy Rhodes used in the polkadot flying v so i think i might give it a try . Thanks for the info guys much appriciated!

Im a big fan of the Air Norton(N) and Tone Zone(B) setup.

AirN + TZ = great for Gilbertesque stuff + you can get a great Petrucciesque feel too, amp depending of course.

Oh, and yeah, just as simple as removing solder from oldies, and lashing in newies. Since most new pickups are 4-conductor, you may just have to solder the p-ups differently depending on your preference of wiring config. Otherwise, just solder 'em as you find 'em.

Most Dimarzio pickups will be great....certainly an improvement on the stock pickups.

The sound from my JS1200 Ibanez is the best I have heard yet on an Ibanez. Joe Satriani's own choice. Check out the specs on the official Ibanez website.
My old Epiphone had Dimarzio X2N pickups installed and was a huge improvement.

i just fitted a fast track 2 to my squire strat as an experiment. Warm full tone and it really pushes the tubes compared to the ****ty stock pick ups. Easy to install to install too if you're handy with an iron, the install guide is easy to follow and there's plenty on on-line guides.

Swapped out the stock INFi and ii in my Ibanez and went for Seymour Duncan Screamin' Demon in the bridge and Jazz in the neck. Unreal difference. Just have to get around to taking em out and finding out why they won't rise up closer to the strings.........
