So what? Go with FBD then. Don't loose sleep over it.

Well it is up to you to shop around. Only a fool would accept the first insurance quote. You should also try to get that lower quote reduced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,863 ✭✭✭✭crosstownk

Assuming that the policy benefits are the same, try calling Hibernian again and inform them of your quote from FBD - they may ....er.... 'adjust' the quote.

My wife received a renewal quote from AXA recently. It stated that as she was a 'valued customer' they were offering her a competitive renewal. So, she rang a few other insurance companies and got a better quote. Then she called AXA back to say she had a better price - at which point AXA matched the other quote. So my Mrs told AXA to 'go away' (read Fcuk off) as if she was such a valued customer, why didn't they offer the best possible price from the outset? TBH, it's typical. This was the second time AXA pulled the valued customer line and last year they matched the competitor's quote too.

I totally agree, but my point is that they pulled the valued customer line in the hopes that she would say 'yippee' and let the policy roll on. Fortunately, Mrs crosstownk is not that stupid :D

I'm gonna ring em on Monday morning and tell them about the quote I got from FBD. The same thing happened to my Dad recently too. He applied to get his insurance renewed and found that the price had risen by x amount. He argued with them for ages on the phone, and told them that he didn't want to do business with them anymore, they rang back 20 mins later with a quote that was €100 cheaper than their origiinal quote!!!???

Funnily enough FBD quoted me €1550 fully comp on the same car that Hibernian quoted me €756 fully comp. I think they must have some kind of random hilarious quote machine at work or something.

    George Dubya maybe?

OP are you sure your broker is not the funking joke? Sometimes brokers don't get you as good a quote as you can get direct or via the internet. Just shop around. There's always big inexplicable differences between companies.

MentalMickey, ring Hibernian back up. Don't forget benifits... What are the benifits of the Hibernian policy and what are the benifits of the FBD policy. I wouldn't care how much I was paying if I was getting no claims bonus protection!!

Geez , who'd have thought - insurance quotes being different.

This is nothing new , your not special it happens every day.

Clarkson was quoted £25k for insurance on an Escort Cossie over 10 yrs ago............

Its kinda new to me. I never really "shopped around" before. I went with a broker on a recommendation from a friend when I first started driving, and stuck with em until now.

even more shocking was that I was only looking for 3rd party fire and theft and the 431 I got is fully comp with all the perks!

Get the best quote from the broker. Then shop around yourself with the various insurance companies. Usually it pays off.

Insurance costs can be very variable from company to company. Last year when my renewal was up I got a decent few extra quotes. The closest offer was almost 50% higher than my renewal quote. I changed my car recently (and insurance costs) and my new renewal quote is 35% higher and one of the higher quotes I have.

I presume it depends on how much risk each company wants to take on in various areas of it's portfolio at a point in time.

Why the parlaver, this happens all the time.

There are many reasons that insurance companies differ on quotes for the same risk. Think of it like getting some one in to do some decorating. Will you go with the first quote or the second quote? Probably not you'll go back to them all and
tell them the cheapest and ask can they match it, if they cant then too bad.

Funny AXA have just pulled this with me, last year they quoted me 900 i asked is there anyway i could get it cheaper, they said a newer safer car would usually bring back cheaper quotes so this year, they quoted me 1040 after i upgraded (in years) the car.

Then i told them my girlfriend, who is also insured on my policy, had this year got a full licence what does that change it?
    Yeah to 930.

I laughed said i think your looking for too much went to 123.ie got a quote just below 800, and bang AXA matched it!:D

I just saved 1500 eur by going with hibernian instead of quinn!... every company, car and person generates different quotes. You're quote was hardly something to go shout about. 400eur difference is minimal!

I'd still tell them to flip off, on principle, all other things being equal.

I was with Hibs through a broker for years. Every year I shopped around and every year the Hibs/Broker combo was cheapest, until last year. Car became 2 years newer and went from 1.9 to 2.2 but FBD came back almost half what Hibs were quoting and were including no claims protection, which Hibs wanted extra for. I offered the broker another bite as I've had a good relationship with him over the years but he said he couldn't even get close. Adios!

Moral: Even if you think you're happy with the quote, spend half an hour on the phone and you could save a packet.

This is precisely what the insurance companies/brokers rely on when they send you their 'best' quote. I've spoken to so many people recently with the "ah sure I've been with them for years" attitude when it comes to car insurance and blindly accept the fact that their insurance company is giving them the cheapest quote. Shop around people!!

    Every year for me it's:
    1. Phonebook
    2. List of insurance companies
    3. Phone
    4. Conversation hat :)
    5. Get the 2 cheapest quotes and pit them against each other to see who can go the lowest for the same level of cover

    DC.

    Benifits...Smenifits....!!!!!

Benifits are only makey uppey rubbish spouted by insurance companies to make people pay more for their insurance.

Insurance is not like a physical commodity where the cheapest is not necessairly the best. For example, if you buy a cheap car stereo, chances are the sound will be smap.

But insurance is very simple. It is a bit of paper you stick on your windscreen to allow you legally drive on the road. Find the cheapest possible quote you can and go with it. End of story IMO.

Now, don't even get me started on Travel Insurance....

I'd say free windscreen cover and step-back/protected NCB are two benefits worth having; wouldn't you?

Like all insurance - it only becomes worth it if you need it.

BnA, you are obviously one of these people who drive around, never thinking about the possibility of being involved in an accident/crash. I was one of those until last year when I paid the price for overconfidence and wrote off my car. Delighted I was with Hibernian because the claims process was very transparent, fair and efficient. I was back on the road in a new car within 2 weeks having everything sorted out.

My first cousin, who is with another insurer, who was in another crash still hasn't got paid 3 months later. It isn't all about the lowest quote and putting a piece of paper on the window. When you cause €11,000 worth of damage to a car, lets hear what you have to say about benefits not being important.

What about the free breakdown assist? I know a good few people that have benefittted from this?

Or what about a free rental car for the duration your own car is out of operation?? Not worth having??

I have been happy with them too until Quinn offered me a big reduction.
When I went back to Hib to see if they would match it the girl said they couldn't and to go with Quinn for now. She said Hib would welcome me back if I decided to change back in the future. :)

Are you saying you would you pay extra to be with one insurace company over another because they would pay out a claim faster.

    IMO that's simply nuts.

    RE other Benifits....

24 hour breakdown assist...? This is the only one that I would say might possibly be of some use to you. But, if you want this, instead of paying your insurer an extra few hundred quid, join the AA. They're the experts at it.

Windscreen cover....? Biggest joke ever. How much is a new windscreen going to cost you....? Is it worth paying a few hundred quid extra every single year just to stay with a company who are giving you windscreen cover ? It is in it's orse....?

Free car rental while your car is out of action. Again, is it worth paying a few hundred quid every single year of your life for ?

IMO. Insurance is all about gambling. The vast vast majority of people will lose money on their insurance. i.e. You will spend more money on insurance that it will pay out to you. So, the less things you have insured, the more money you will save.

When it comes to something important like my familys health or our house, I'm not going to take a gamble. Insure them up and cover all eventualities.

    But windscreens.....?????

My way of buying car Insurance is simple. Price around and get the cheapest quote. The only time I might take a look at the small print is if I had two quotes almost the same and I had to pick between the two.

The decision wheather to go Fully Comp ar 3rd party is down to the value of the car. I would go 3rd party for anything less than 5k (ish)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭Dampsquid

When an insurance company gives you a quote, then they match a much cheaper quote from someone else. Why do people stay with their original insurer, they just tried to rip you off. Why give them your business.
