Does anyone know if any insurance company provide short term car insurance?
I need to buy a car, and I need to insure it just for 2-3 days, can this be done in Ireland?

    Thanks,
    Marcin

Quinn direct will provide instant cover if you call them - This is valid cover effective within about an hour. Make sure you record the policy number they'll give you, and I'd suggest you get them to fax you a cover letter too.

They'll then send you the 'proposal form' and the rest of the paperwork for the annual policy which needs to be returned within 7 days to take out the full annual policy....which you don't return of course.

After 7 days the policy they set up for you is automatically cancelled.

You'll only pay for the 7 days insurance they provided and a small admin fee... Don't mess them about though - They'll end up black flagging you.

I've done this and paid about €170 total for 7 days insurance in the past....Car was a Landrover Defender 2.5 turbo diesel.

+1 this is your best bet. Tell them that you financial situation changed, you didn't like there policy details or the car didn't work out or something..

I'm just very surprised that you can't buy a short term insurance in this country (like you can in every other EU country...)..

I'm surprised I can't get a decent pint of Guinness in most European countries, like you can in every county in Ireland.

You have a solution, no? Then what's the problem?

    It's a sunny Friday outside...Cheer up.

yes, but this solution costs me 160Eur for a small car, comparing to eg UK, when I last time insured 01 Jaguar XJ, for 3 days for 20£,
so it's not real solution for me..

Have you already insurance in Ireland? If you do then most companies allow you to add a temporary ADDITIONAL vehicle for up to one month for a charge of course. Just ring your insurance company and inquire about it.

The admin fee in ROI is €50 or £35 in the north for a private car, or £40 for commercial vehicle. Ive seen people do this on small cars, an ended up paying about 85quid.

    Bump!

Any update on this situation? I need to insure a micra for around a week, no way in hell im paying over a third of an annual policy for that.
Im leaving the country somewhere around the 17-18 June and my policy is up on the 9th.
Rang Quinn (my insurer) and they wouldn't accommodate me in any way. I may have f*cked up by actually asking them for short term insurance but oh well!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,553 ✭✭✭roosh

I know you've left the country at this stage, but this may be helpful for anyone else looking for short term insurance.

Was looking to do something similar; I'm more than likely going to be leaving the country in late August, so wanted to insure my car for the next couple of months, but short-term insurance doesn't seem to be possible anywhere.

One thing I read on another forum was that, if you know someone else who has a policy, it might be possible to add a temporary additional vehicle to their policy, on a short term basis. I'm not sure how common this is, but I tried doing it with my own car under my mothers policy, with Cornmarket, but after I told them that I would be leaving the country in a few months, it was basically a no go.

I'm not sure what version of the truth you would have to tell them in order to get it, but that could be one possibility.

condi they were still doing it up to month ago! it cost me 38 euro to do it with them on a 1.9 so for example if the quote for a year is 520 euro it will be 52 euro and theyll charge i think a 15 euro cancellation charge (cant remember the cancellation charge exactly)

    hope this helps

    hi condi

i did over the internet and you have the option of the end of your quote to py by credit card or pay direct debit so choose direct debit and they will send you the paperwork you will be insured for one week(you have one week to arrange payments) i did it on a saturday and i rang them that tuesday to cancel it.

Yep thats it. They need you to fill out forms and sign the documentation to set up the direct debit.

Sorry to bump this again but I need some help..

I purchased a car in the UK and am trying to arrange it's collection however when I called my insurer to ask about a temporary switch over to the UK car they said they would not cover me as I am not the registered owner and because I have just taken out a new policy on an Irish vehicle and they haven't received my original no claims certificate yet or copy of my licence and so they won't cover me on the car I want to bring back.

If I could get temporary cover that would be ideal.

Is there a way I could get the UK car covered online tonight or first thing in the morning even?

I only need it for 24 hrs.

If your own insurance company is not happy to cover you, it looks like you will have to purchase temporary insurance in UK.
AFAIR there is few companies offering that kind of cover for foreign people coming to UK for purchasing a car for export.

I have been trying to research it and it seems you'd need to be a UK resident for many of them, if anyone can find such a company I'd be very grateful.
So far Google hasn't been my friend!

I didn't see a condition anywhere there, that you need to be UK resident

Thanks a lot Cinio, I think the Aviva one does offer the type of cover I need.

    Much appreciated.

Buy a policy online with any insurance company, and then just cancel it on Monday. It won't cost you much.

Anyone know of any insurance company that will insure me for 3 months as a named driver on someone else's car?

The only company who can do this is the insurance company of the current policy holder who is insured on the car at present. No insurance company will just insure a named driver, the policy has to be in someone's name which makes them the main policy holder.

Yeah I'm just after figuring that out. Unfortunately his insurance company won't insure people under 25.

Have an A3 with the missus while my XK8 is layed up at my parents home (don't need two cars), what do you reckon is my best bet for insuring the XK for a couple of days next month? We want to use it as our wedding car.

I can't imagine FBD (the Audi's insurer) will let us transfer insurance from a 1.6 to a 4 litre without issue? Maybe I'm wrong but any other thoughts on the best way to do this?

If you have your own policy with driving other cars option just transfer the XK ownership to your missus and carry your cert of insurance with you if stopped. This will give you 3rd party cover in the XK.

The Audi is her's, I'm a named driver on that policy. I have no policy of my own anymore.

Just noticed my declaration of being off the road ran out in September 14' I don't remember at all getting a renewal notice so busy panicking about that now, might just have to sell it up north to avoid a 1k tax bill :(

My insurance policy is up at the end of this month. I'm moving away in about 6 weeks but would like to drive my car until then.

Does anyone know if it's possible to add my car to my Dad's policy on a short-term basis? As in, his policy would cover his car and my car.

Otherwise I guess I could just give up my car and get named on his and hope that he doesn't mind lending his to me every now and then until I leave :)

    Thanks.

His insurer may allow him to add it as a temporary additional vehicle to his policy and you as a temporary driver.

Once he is fully up front with the company and everything is in order from an underwriting perspective then it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks a million. We're going to ring his broker in the morning to see what's what.

I was also looking into renewing my policy and then cancelling it after 2 months or so. I guess I'll wait and see which one would be cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭LeChienMefiant

Just renew your own policy and cancel mid term. You only get charged short term rates if it's a new policy canceled mid term.Otherwise it's pro rata, get this in writing from your insurer and make sure they're clear what your asking for.
