really not looking forward to this - its one of the few comics I think should be left a comic [Maus being one of the others]. Costumes look all slick and shinny but I seriously doubt they are going to capture the real feeling of the book.

Hmm, I think Maus could be a great animated kids films.

As far as Watchmen goes, it might not llive up to the comic, but it should be a very kickass film in it's own right.

dear god no - I don't think any studio could animate it correctly. The main reason persepolis worked as a film [besides them thankfully choosing to make it classically] was due to Marjane Satrapi directing it. I can't see Art Spiegelman directing an adaptation of Maus. Sometimes I think maybe if it was made along the lines of When the Wind Blows but then I go an reread Maus and think no, wouldn't work.

This is a case were I can't separate the comic from the film. I know people can/will argue that point and for alot of comics into movies I would agree with them but not in this case.

    That was a joke. :)

I'm not really much of a comic book guy, so I guess I can accept it more so than someone who's into comics, but then again, I'm a big Hellboy fan, and I thought the film was extremely well done. I don't know, lets just say I'll be looking forward to seeing the Watchmen film when it comes out.

The characters look pretty well (apart from ozymindias, who looks FAR too young.....) but from rumours I've heard, they butchered the story, so I'm probably gonna be yelling at the cinema screen when I go to see it.
    Ah well:(

I'm a massive x-men fan but I found i could separate my fanboy [or rather girl] nerd impluse with the X films but Watchman is slightly different in that its a comic that has a special place for people within the comics industry - when I was doing my BA [which was in comics, I know how sad] most of the tutors told everyone they had to read watchman at least once a year for the rest of their lives and I know most of the DC editorial staff say the same thing.

I think they work - Watchmen was written back in the 80s yes? iirc super hero costumes had that cloth look back then, which Watchmen riffed on. So they were contemporary at least, but totally daft looking now. These new ones are in keeping with modern stylings.

Shouldn't Night Owl be a little more portly in the midrif though?

Despite Night Owl looking a bit Batman-y, they look pretty good (Comedian and Rorschach especially). I dunno if it could be a bit overly stylised though - always thought Watchmen worked because these people were so normal. But they are only publicity shots though.

Looking forward to a Dr Manhattan reveal though. Gonna be tough, especially when he goes all giant :D And the Mars sequence will be... interesting.

I don't know about that I agree that Night Owl looks very batman but more George Clonney in Batman and Robin Batman then anything else.

Rorschach does look good but I want to see him move [esp his face mask] and talk before I make up my mind if they got him right.

well, modern in terms of the superhero that wears leather/pvc/kevlar, which is the norm now. Ok, Ozymandias' nipples are a bit daft, but then so were the little booties he had in the comic (ditto the silk spectre's costume) ;)

Oh and I agree; Rorshach will live or die by his voice. If it's not right ... :(

Yeah I wonder if they will keep with the original and have his mask 'change' as the film progresses. Curious to see how they pull that off.

When something is unique to its medium, it should be kept within that medium. Watchmen, is most definitely a comic book story. There are things happening between panels that just wont fly on screen. But damn it to hell I know I'm going to go see it, even with my bagfull of criticism.

Well obviously its the crime fighters in their heyday, and they age them when it hits the mid-eighties

Rorschach looks right, am looking forward to hearing him. I like the look of the comedian, and also Night Owl.

Not too keen on how Ozymandias looks, but will judge it on how it plays out and looks onscreen.

I have high hopes for this film though. Synder is a fan boy, and his take on 300 shows how close he can get to the written format, and by all accounts he has been just as loyal to the graphic novel in this case.

I am dying to see the dvd release with Ger Butler in the Black Freighter story.

That is due to Alan Moore not the studio. He dcided that any future adaptations of his work that the artist would get the sole credit, try searching Dave Gibbons and you get a couple of results.

have to admit it looks good. i actually thought the comedian was painted for a second.

TBH considering what a nighmare watchmen is to translate if it ends up being as good as V for Vendetta i'll be happy. the guts of it is still a very good story.
