Just the usual stuff, have enough water/fruit/music whatever with you to get you through between breaks. Chill out and play your game and your table. There is no point looking at the finishing post when there are 988 players still in. You will not be the best player there, you will not be the worst player there. Most of the things you can do right and wrong are just sommon sense really. Bring a fleece/hoodie/jumper or something even if you don't intend to wear it. If it is cold, which is a distinct possibility given the variations possible with AC then you will need it.

Don't put chips in your pocket. read the rules in case of slight differences. they will be more structly enforced probably than at the Fitz etc.

I'll probably pop over at some point on the Thursday evening as well to scope out the lie of the land etc.

DON'T:Have the tournament directors calculate how much of the prizepool there is left to chop in the event of you getting that far. Do it yourself instead.

If I make the Final Table , I won't be chopping it with anyone. I've got chopphobia due to some bad deals I've made.....never agian....
In an Ian Pasiley accent....Never, Never, Never.

No.1 Tip : Dont get slushed drunk the night before the main event, ( normally i never drink before an event) but i went to the bar the night before last year just for a few friendly beers & ended up falling into bed at 4am twisted & awaking with a hangover the size of a small hospital, still managed to get through day1, just about;.

I remember speaking to "The Fox" prior to last years event & he was very apprehensive about playing & was half thinking of selling the ticket. Well we all know what happened to him & I have absolutely no doubt if that luckbox De Wolfe hadn't hit runner runner for his poxy flush Fox could have gone on to win the event outright, he would have been a massive chip leader.

So really you should have no fears of playing, it is just another tournament. As said before bring plenty of water, fruit, music etc. I remember playing in City West to 5.15am in the morning in the IPC & we couldn't get a glass of water not too mention tea, coffee or beer.

Take each day at a time. Your ambition should be to get through Day 1 with average chips. The same for Day 2 & 3. If you have average chips all the way through you're gonna be in the money. It's important not to be all in if possible, unless of course you have the nutsies or you are low stacked.

Enjoy the experience & good luck. I look forward to reading some amusing posts from you.

thanks are you playing K? the fox was robbed all right. He took it well also. I'd like to think I would have taken it so well but I'm afraid I may have done a monkey dance...I strive to be classy......:o If you do see me taking a beat so well, please do not approach me afterwards as I'll be stitching my tongue back on.

Not looking good at present. :(

Wish Fox would take his bad beats as well in the €25 freezeouts in Aces, then again I suppose the €160K softened the blow a little :p

    it's just another tournament.

100% agree, i played it last year and thought wow now this year its just another one. One thing for sure i will be opening my range a bit last year i was a nit ending up out with 20 mins to go at the end of day 1

The single best piece I could offer is to take time over every decision no matter how straight forward it might seem. I know it might sound obvious but you would be amazed by the amount of people who make a snap decision and it costs them. The one time in the tourney I acted quickly was my exit hand. To be fair it was a bit of a cooler and I think it's unlikely I ever get away from the hand but I still regret not taking more time to think it through / play it better and at least have given myself the chance.

Bearing in mind that only 10% make the money, if you won a package would you play or sell? 5k is a nice chunk for s/o in college, but then again hte chance to play in the IO doesnt come along that often.

Also, what is the standard like?
standard really is muck... can see why everyone thinks IO is such good value!

    Is it really this bad?

I got very deep in a satty for this last week and finshed 3 outside of a ticket. At one point late in the touney I had the chip lead and it was looking like I had a real shot at winning a ticket. During this time I started to actually think about how I would manage playing int his tournament if i actually won a ticket. Giving that I am a 21yr old who works a min wage job and doesn't have near the bankroll to play events such as this one, I think I would be 100% scared money in this event. To cash and even get 5k return would mean a great summer for me and this would probably affect my mindset, which it really shouldnt. I think you have to approach this tourney just like any other and play as best you can without letting the pressure get to you. At the end of the day, it will be like any other tournament. You will have to play well and also run well. As Lloyd said though, you could easily find yourself at a table with some wealthy fish who could just dumb off his whole stack to you. If you won a seat in this tournament and are scared of the money involved, I think you should just try to detatch yourself emotionally from it and play it the the best of your ability. Nobody is guaranteed anything in these things, no matter how much edge they have. This is just the nature of tournament poker.
Look at the example of Carlos Mortensen at lasy years open. He was like one of the first eliminations on day 1 when his Aces lost to somebody's kings. As I recall, Mortensen opened, guy with KK raised, Mortensen re-raised and guy pushed. The board brought like 4 diamonds to go with the K of diamonds the other guy was holding, sending one of the most feared players in the tourney to the rail. I remember how disgusted Mortensen was in an interview afterwards where he berated the guy for being all in on like the first level after being re-raised by the initial raiser.
It's a long way to the money from day 1 so just play it out like you would normally and enjoy the experience. Anything can happen.

Ultimately, like any tournament there will be players who played every street correctly and were out during day one and players who played tens upon tens of hands sub optimally who make the final 20.

Very well put. God tourneys put me on such tilt even when im doin the sucking out. Good luck to all that play though...
