    Folks,

Just wondering does anyone know of any charity here (in Ireland) that's organising/fundraising for the NYC Marathon 2008?

Myself and a couple of friends want to run it this year (after doing the Dublin one a couple of years ago) and it seems the only way we'll definitely get a spot is by going with a charity. Otherwise it's a lottery and sure we don't want to get into a situation were one of us might be going but the other two cannot.

    Any advice is most welcome.

LOL... this is how I ended up registered for the London Marathon this year and my two mates sit at home doing nothing! Best way to guarantee a spot is to run for a NY charity. Im sure there are plenty of ones you'd be happy to run for.

Also, im sure if you registered with a NY charity and fundraised for a dublin charity of your choice and raised say $100 for the NY charity no one can STOP you running... but i wouldnt suggest such a thing! :p

Who else is doing it this year? Looking forward to it already! Is it really the best marathon in the world?

First time marathon runner doing it with my Dad who has done 3 or 4 and the Chicago Triathlon. Want to smash his best time (Belfast 3.45). 22 year old reasonably fit lad. What is a realistic time/goal I could set myself, have started training last month and propose really working at it now and over the summer!

    Cheers

Did you have to raise money to get a place in the marathon? Like Ive no problem trying to raise for charity, but 5,500 is a hell of a lot. www.cmrf.org/New_York_Marathon.HTML

Does anyone know, if you only ended up raising 2,000 would they give you your plave, and just take the 650 quid deposit for expenses?

No there are several ways to enter the marathon iirc

    1. lottery
    2. charity place
    3. be a member of the organising club and run some of their races
    4. have 5 consecutive rejections or have rtun the race 15 times previously
    5. be reasonably fast

Hey Hunnymonster, RE ways to enter marathon

    1. lottery
Going to enter this, think the odds arent great tho

    2. charity place
I am a little doubtful about my ability to raise 5 and a half grand

    3. be a member of the organising club and run some of their races
Do you know of any clubs I can join to this end? Would like to join a running club.
Is setting up my own one to this end an option?

    4. have 5 consecutive rejections or have rtun the race 15 times previously
I think I might be past running marathons in 6 years :)

    5. be reasonably fast
    Yea, I wish

The club you need to be a member of is New York Road Runners and you need to have completed nine of their races during 2007.

Alternatively try the lottery, but if you apply THREE years in a row and are rejected on each occasion, you'll be guaranteed entry on your fourth attempt.

..or be a fast runner (have run sub-2:55 marathon for men under 40, or sub-1:23 half marathon...the equivalent for females under 40 is sub-3:23/1:37 respectively)

    ...or enter by Sports International

actually the Sports International looks not too bad. Just got the info on it. Itll cost about 2 grand for flights and accoma or 1.5 grand if I get someone to share with me.

Just wondering if anyone is doing New York this year? It's just over 2 weeks away now, and I still haven't heard anything from Sports Travel International. Is this normal, or should I be worried?
