So anyone reckon we'll see any new products today or just the SDK. I reckon we'll get the 3G iPhone announcement with it being ready in a couple of week. then i'll really want one!!

Imo they'll show off a SDK beta and announce that it is delayed, some devs will show off their fledgling apps, they'll say stuff about the rumoured "free" apps and the apps sold via iTunes, possible 3G iPhone announcement. I'd be surprised if the SDK is released.

Edit: Am I right in thinking that if they announce a 3G phone that they will have to put it through FCC approval so it'll take a few weeks to ship?

I doubt they'll be releasing a 3G iPhone before the summer, especially after releasing it over here where 3G is one of the main selling points. If they were going to release in Ireland and had a 3G phone ready they would have been better just waiting til it was ready.

Then again it's not like Ireland is going to have a huge effect on what Apple produce....

And yeah i'd assume it would have to go through FCC approval again, what with there being new parts and such

The whole event is being billed as a roadmap to the SDK, with an announcement on new Enterprise features. I know you guys are looking forward to new iPhone hardware, but lets face it thats (IMO) always going to be keynote material - hardly going to be announced at a townhall event like todays.

Apple announcements are made on a Tuesday so today won't be the day for anything. SDK has just been announced so a 3G iPhone will not be on the cards for a while and well an announcement would be made for a keynote show by Apple.

3G technology will be very big for Apple so a whole new phone has to be designed as the current model is 2.5G. As they released the new firmware package in january it will probably be another few months before 3G comes on board.

With 3G the ability to use iChat will come on board as an official application. SDK will create a lot more applications so of course Apple will wait until developers have basically written tons of applications.

your so wrong its not even funny, the event launching the SDK doesnt start for half an hour afaik, also there were no new product launches this tuesday for the first time for a long time, so it stands to reason that a new product may get launched today.

also on at&t's website there was a line saying a '3G or Standard iPhone compatible' according to the boys on MacBreak Weekly, so it is coming soon imo.

For all we know Apple could announce the 3G iPhone today (highly unlikely), the phone could be with the FCC for weeks. Phones only have to show up on the FCC site after their approval. FYI the current iphone took either 6 or 7 weeks to pass.

    Yeah that's what I thought.

Yeah, and it'll give me plenty of time to hone my Objective C skills and develop some applications which will be ready by launch.

What's this about being able to test your apps only by joining the dev center at $99?

not too bad considering XCode is free with Leopard.......i suppose they have to mitigate the $100,000,000 hit somehow

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭babypink

"What does the 100m iFund do for the community?
Steve: This is going to help young developers with funding. It helps the whole iPhone ecosystem."

"Business apps are coming, should RIM be worried?
    Steve: Go ask them."......rofl

Am after rolling back to Tiger..! :(

It's free on Tiger too but an older version. Can't see it anywhere.. but did they happen to say it's only compatible with XCode 3.0 (on Leopard)?

"Nominal fee" for iPod Touch users. January Software Upgrade all over again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,199 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Bit of a shame we can't develop using the SDK for free.

Irregardless of whether the app you develop is free of charge, you'll need to pay the $99 fee into the Dev Centre in order to distribute it. One time fee, but a free nonetheless.

Remote debugging from Xcode sounds really cool. No virtual machine then. Designing a UI with Interface Builder for multitouch as well as using an accelerometer for input should be really interesting!

"What will happen if someone does a VOIP app?
A: We will only stop VOIP over cell networks, but not WiFi."

    iSkype anyone?? :p

Isn't there one or two "Skype-like" clients available already? But yeah, 'iSkype' would be cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭Wizoom

I can't believe they're actually going to make iPod Touch owners shell out again... Come on Apple, apps are not an iPhone-only thing - most iTouch owners I know bought it with the future app potential in mind, but without needing a phone. Seems a little harsh to make us pay for this. The January upgrade kind of made sense because you were paying for iPhone apps, but this is being released the same time on both platforms!

as far as i'm aware this isn't Apple's doing, they are simply complying with the Sarbanes-Oxley requirements in the US

Looks like we're getting a Java SDK as well (http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/08/sun-prepping-java-for-iphone-your-craplet-investment-is-safe/).

As a Java developer primarily, this fills me with quite a bit of joy!

I could be wrong.. but didn't Steve say at one point that he excluded the Java Runtime Environment from the iPhone because it's a dead language for mobile devices? Obviously eating those words now!

An interview / FAQ on the iPhone with Jobs early last year printed in the NY Times.

    Source
Markoff: “What about all those plugins that live within Safari now, like Flash or like Java or like JavaScript?”

Jobs: “Well, JavaScript’s built into the Phone. Sure.”

Markoff: “And what are you thinking about Flash and Java?”

Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”

Yeah, I know. But Jobs doesn't have to ship Java to everyone, and only the people who want Java can have it. Sun gets the customers they want, and Apple gets to stand by their own position. Win win, no words to be eaten.
