Day 1 of this game in progress, with the Irish bowlers on top.

UAE won the toss, decided to bat and are currently 144 for 6 after 52 overs. Pick of the bowlers are Trent with 2 for 16 off 10 and Lanky with 2 for 26 off 9.

Update: UAE finish on 228 all out in 72 overs.

A good day's work in the field by the Irish boys, with the wickets being nicely spread around. Trent, Lanky & Alex Cusack all took 2, with Greg Thompson, Andre Botha and Kyle McCallan taking one each. Best figures would have to be Alex Cusack's 2 for 13 off 7.

From the scorecard, the fielding looks to have been good too, with 2 catches for Kevin O'Brien, one for his brother Niall behind the stumps, while Paul Stirling (in, I think, his debut for Ireland) took a catch and a run-out.

So, not lot of runs to chase, and Ireland will be looking to chase them quickly, both to gain the all-important first-innings lead (points for that in this competition) and to give their bowlers something solid to defend in the UAE's second innings.

The Irish camp have targetted full points from this game in their quest to retain the Intercontinental Cup.

The openers now have a tricky few overs to see out before the close - maybe an hour or so. A good platform would be no wickets down at the close. Hope that's not a commentator's curse! :D

A good day's work in the Sheikh Zayed Stadium saw Ireland finish on 46 for 1, after bowling out the UAE for 228.

Paul Stirling was the unfortunate batsman to fall, having scored two, leaving Eoin Morgan (21*) to accompany William Porterfield (16*) through to the close.

All in all, the Irish camp will be happy with the progress of day 1, and will look to score quickly in the morning & build a good first-innings lead.

Trent quoted as saying he will be looking for 500 from the irish batters! good to see some raw ambition!

Truedub, do you know the hours of play in this match?

Ireland close day 2 in a strong position, 138 runs ahead with 3 first-innings wickets in hand.

Eoin Morgan moved to 47 before getting out LBW, and Kevin O'Brien added 33 to the score. Andre Botha & Alex Cusack went relatively cheaply, bringing the captain to the wicket to join Niall O'Brien. The two Wheeltappers & Shunters added a massive 163 for the 7th wicket before Trent departed, closing the action for the day.

All in all, a good day's work from the batsmen, with Niall O'Brien spearheading with a magnificent 137*, ably supported by the captain. The question for tomorrow is how long to bat for, and/or how big a lead is required.

Like so many of the ICC Intercontinental Cup matches, once you have the edge on first innings, it's weighted in favour of that team. Of course, win the match, yet they've done the hard work, they probably know that.

Wheeltappers & Shunters? Is that a technical term or is it out of their undying love for a Bernard Manning variety show? :D

    3rd Day: Close

UAE 228 all out (72 overs)
Ireland 474 all out (134.3 overs)
    UAE 186/7 (60 overs)

Niall O'Brien.... fill yer boots. 174. wow. Ably supported by Trent with 69, (7th wicket stand of 163) and Kyle 52* (8th wicket stand of 77)

UAE are 60 behind with 3 wickets in hand with one day to go. With Saqib on 98, there is the possibility of Ireland batting again. Fingers crossed that wont be needed!

Saqib 5 shy of the double. All out for 306. Ireland need 61.

Does every team play everyone else DMC?

They do, Kev, only once, not home and away. The fixtures are reversed for the next 2 year cycle. Ireland have played Scotland (a weather effected draw, which Ireland got the 1st innings batting points) and big wins against UAE and Bermuda.

    Ireland fixtures to come...

Wed 9 - Sat 12 July, Netherlands v Ireland, Sportpark Laag Zestienhoven, Rotterdam

Wed 6 - Sat 9 August, Ireland v Canada, Castle Avenue, Clontarf

Sun 5 - Wed 8 October, Namibia v Ireland, Wanderers Cricket Ground, Windhoek

Sun 12 - Wed 15 October, Kenya v Ireland, Gymkhana Club Ground, Nairobi
