Going to Prague. Any beer recommended?

    Hi folks,

heading to Prague with the girlfriend in two weeks, was wondering if there are any good Czech beers that might be able to top Budweiser....

Only messing! :D But I was wondering are there any other good Czech beers apart from Budvar and Staropramen? And do the Czech brew any Weissbier?

Also, is there any good brewery tours in Prague or any other beer related goodness?

I think it's excellent that the local, cheap beer happens to be Staropramen, Budvar and the like.

    Thanks.

There was a microbrewery in the centre of Prague when I was there. It was a restaurant too. But I can't remember the name of the place.

You should get you hands on the "Good Beer Guide : Praque and the Czech Republic". It is published by CAMRA and reviews all Czech breweries, rates the beers. It also reviews the bars in Prague and says which beers are served.

The best Czech beer by a mile is Pilsner Urquelll & the vast majority of pubs in Prague will have this on tap. I would say Gambrinus (brewed by Pilsner Urquil) is a close second followed by Staropramen and Budvar would be third and forth respectively (Btw stay well away from the horrible Krusovice!)

The local brewry in Prague is Staropramen and they do daily tours. The rest are from the south of Czech Republic: Buvar is from České Budějovice & Pilsner Urquell & Gambrinus are from Pilsen.

Pilsner Urquell one of the largest sellers in the world is located in Praque, who claim to have inventer Pils, not sure how good or bad the tour is as iv never been.

Oops my bad, i thought it was in Prague. By the way if their new taps are anywhere, spare a thought for me, iv spent manys an hour designing them (even though they look quite crazy!)

The brewery and restaurant in question is U Fleku http://www.ufleku.cz/en/ and I would recommend it highly.

Thanks for all the replies lads.

Must start getting a beer itinarary ready.

Will try and get Staropramen's brewery and Ufleku in, and try a little of all the beers.

When I come back I might try and do a little beer review and add in any other good pubs I might find on my travels.

Most of the pilsners are good, just some to steer clear of, I reckon are Staro Brno, and some other muck from Prague you can get in Redmonds of Ranelagh.

I had a lovely local brew when in Kutna Hora, and the microbrewries in Prague put The Porter House to shame. I mean, their beer is crap, but Czech pils makes Porter House beers taste like a steaming pile of liquified cat guts.

I see two contributors who need to hand in their orange badges. For shame. :p

There's an article on microbreweries in Prague on IrishCraftBrewer here

I would recomend Staropramen myself. Also in Prague if you venture slightly away from the tourist orientated pubs you will find good selections of local beer aswell as some very strong vodka if thats to your liking.

That's a bit harsh. The Porterhouse produce some excellent beers.

I personally really enjoy TSB and Brainblásta as well as their seasonal Vienna lager (just gone) and Chocolate Stout (due back in today, if I'm not mistaken). They also have three quite different but tasty stouts and Hersbruker is a decent lager. I know people who enjoy porterhouse red, but don't care for it myself and while I don't rate the other two lagers, there is a market for them among people who are used to less flavourful beers.

I understand that your tastes may run to Bohemian Pilsners but that does not mean that all other beers are bad. Bring a cask of TSB and a Keg of any Bohemian Pilsner you care to mention to a CAMRA festival and the TSB will win. Does that mean that TSB is a better beer? No, it means that CAMRA people like Real Ale not kegged lager.

Chocolate Stout (due back in today, if I'm not mistaken).
Available in Temple Bar since Wednesday.

Pilsner Urquell - hands down. And when you get home you can drop into the 'czech inn' in temple bar for pints of it (and others) on draught :)

That article is perhaps the best beer review of Prague available on the web. U Fleku is a must see.

This just goes to prove that it is all a matter of personal taste. I couldn't stomach Urquell in Prague. Foul stuff everywhere I tasted it. Gambrinus - now that's a different story. Nectar from the Gods. They do a lovely dark version as well. Of course you also have to try the absinthe and give the barman a surprise by insisting upon sugar, a spoon and some matches to go with it. They love it when you drink the stuff properly.

    Gambrinus is great.

    Uh, orange cards? What?

Gotta agree, couldn't stand Pilsner Urquell when I was there, but I know others who can't get enough of the stuff. Gambrinus is one of the best beers I have ever tasted, I'd love if you could get it here.

Yea I got Gambrinus when I asked for the cheapest beer they had on tap and loved it. Had to keep my receipts to make sure I remembered the name of it. There was some nasty stuff I drank over there though too. I'd advise anyone to go for Gambrinus. Cheap and lovely.

Best beer in czech and probably the best in the world is 'Pilsner Urquell'. Brewed in a town called Plzen, just outside of prague, brewed since 1295. Czech beer is the best beer and this one top's them all. My girlfriend is from prague, i'm there 3 times a year, and look more forward to a pint of pilsner than i do the holiday.
