I am the proud owner and consumer of about twenty gazillion Marlboro Lights from China and Thailand but was caught short this evening so had to buy a pack of aformentioned. Being a fervent and committed smoker will someone please explain why a fag from Ireland will burn down five times quicker than other smokes will? Is the paper thinner or what? Two puffs and Puff the Magic Dragon gone, what the hell???????????/

Maybe your lungs have expanded so much (by some Jesus like miracle) that you literally can only have those few puffs?

Check the nicotine (and tar!) levels on those Asian Lights, a lot of those
countries are seen as developing markets for Western brands and in order to
gain market share are not so 'light' I've had Asian lMarlboro Light cigarettes
that are stronger than ordinary European Marlboro Red.

Plus it's a cultural thing, they like their strong cigarettes over there.

It's normally the other way. Some countries have saltpepper (I think) added which makes them burn faster. You normally don't find this in Irish smokes.

same brand different tobacco's and papers my friend. soon enough you will be smoking the non fire starting type so when you dont take a pull in about 15 seconds the fag goes out automatically. thats the way they are in america.

Boring answer I'm afraid.

Marlboro vary their cigarettes to suit different tastes, so the Asian ones will use a different tobacco and may have less of the chemicals which make the cogarette burn less hot, therefore slower.

Have you ever noticed that if you break a cigarette in half, all the tobacco falls out? that is because the end 3mm is tightly packed, the rest is as loose loose thing from loose town. That saves the manufacturers a fortune because they use a lot less tobacco. A typical cigarette making machine will produce up to 20,000 cigarettes a minute:eek: so you don't have to reduce the tobacco per fag much to save a tonne per day. Tobacco is cheaper in Asia so the manufacturers probably pack it tighter.

Not sure OP but i always find you have to pull harder on duty free/foreign fags to get the same blast from outta them as you get from the home grown ones... Not nessisarly, Korean Marlboro red have the same nicotine and tar content as Irish Marlboro light, but Koreas weird in that sense. Intrestingly, while not quite as satisfying, Korean Marlboro red do seem to have a good punch for their strenth.

On the topic of ciggies, My experiance is that b&h have gone downhill since I started back in 95, My first smokes of b&h tasted delicious, that seems to be gone now. Also, a large part of the reason I smoke marlboro is that it is easier to take a full drag with out having to suck like a scientific vaccum, which is my experiance with b&h.

Also, why oh why do people like silk cut? Guess it relates to taste, but given I usually notice why someone might, I've never seen why with silk cut.

Oh and boo smoking nazi's. I agree with the smoking ban, and protecting others health, I do not agree with the pious "I've got a cause" insanity some antismokers seem to go to.

The answer is two-fold...less tobacco, therefore when rolled by the factory machine, the packing is less dense (more air in the fag) and burns faster.
Also I think they put more saltpetre in EU cigrettes too. Saltpetre is a constituent of gunpowder that helps keep tobacco lit, in the event that it gets slightly damp or stale.

Obviously with the huge taxes on tobacco products within the EU and especially here and in the UK, it's within the interests of cigarette manafacturers for consumers to buy more of their product, since they only get 15-20% of the cost of a pack.
That's my take on it anyway. As someone who only buys smokes for spliffs I've noticed a huge difference in the actual volume of tobacco in an Irish smoke compared to one bought in mainland EU...I can't comment on asian products...

There is a factory in Yuxi in China that is the largest in the world. When they expanded it 8 or 9 years ago, they bought an additional 50 machines, all running at between 14,000 and 18,000 per minute, 24x7. Each machine ran at around 80% efficiency that is 921,600,000 cigarettes per day.
