Considering my first HD/LCD/Plasma

    So, taking the plunge.

owned a small (26" wide) philips crt for a few years now. watched with passing interest ad the new generation of displays but am no expert. 1080p et all still confuses me.

    I have:

A cheap dvd player (to easily set to region 0) but would also consider changing it as it doesnt have DTS, which i prefer.

An old philips 5.1 amp/speaker system which i love as it has never let me down and has inputs and outputs for bloody everything.

Not really a gamer, but a nice screen would probably hasten a step up to next gen gaming. although my xbox/ps2 never saw much use apart from playing dvd's. I prefer movies/tv (sky, non hd)

In a small house at the mo, but will probaby be looking for more space in 1-2 yrs.

Could someone point me to a good noobs guide or chip in with some wisdom?

Thinking of somewhere in the region of 37" 800-1000, not a brand snob, as long as it does what it promises.

Given that you don't seem to have any HD sources it's probably not worth shelling out the extra for a 1080p panel, whether LCD or Plasma. You need to take into account how far away from the screen you'll be and what size screen you'll be using to see if you'd get any noticeable difference with 1080p anyway. Since you'd be upscaling all your SD content this would be the decider, i.e. how well does the set handle SD content.

I've two 42" Panasonic 1080p plasmas, and they handle SD content very well, plus I've seen the 42" Pioneer Kuro in action and it is excellent with SD content too. These are probably too big for what you're looking for, and are probably outside your price range anyway, but they're the ones I've direct experience with.

    Ciarán.
