Satellite - Freeview - Query

In Carrick on Shannon and I need more channels but don't want to subscribe to anyone such as the sky option. I understand freeview could be the solution?

Local guy is advertisng for 180 euro to install and set up for 100 freeview channels not sure what type of box. Does this sound good?

Alternatively there is satellite.ie at 299 euro for install and 200+ channels
    http://www.satellite.ie/acatalog/BBC_Free_to_view.html
    and
    http://www.satellite.ie/acatalog/Sma..._receiver.html
    at just 99 euro.

No idea what the difference is.

I'm really confused and don't know what to choose.
    • Are there any negatives with freeview? could it just vanish afer a while?....if not why do so many people subscribe to sky?
    • I don't mind paying a lot up front if it means lots of good channels and no subscription. I want news channels (bloomberg, fox, cnn etc), educational and entertainment and defo NO adult channels.
I have read other posts about freeview on this site but I'm still very unsure.

What you're looking for is Free To Air (FTA) satellite. Not Freeview (which is UK digital terrestrial). That said, many use the term Freeview to refer to the FTA satellite system, just to add to confusion!

If the local guy is installing a FTA kit including equipment for €180, that's a very good price.

Not many negatives. Channels come and go, especially low budget channels, but not many higher profile channels.

News channels you'd get would include CNN, Sky News, BBC News 24, EuroNews, Bloomberg. You cannot receive Fox News without Sky subscription.

Fox News is a subscription channel on Astra 2 where the Sky channels, BBC, ITV and Irish channels etc come from.

Sky News and BBC News 24 are free to air at that position though so you could get these on those FTA set ups you have described above.

Thanks guys - I can prob live without fox anyway:D

Is there anywhere I can get a complete list of channels available on FTA in this area other than the news channels you mentioned?

Will the decoder/dish quality determine the amount and or quality of channels I receive as there seems to be a big difference in price of dishes?

    List of FTA channels here:

As for decoder/dish query, both should pick up the same channels, it'll just be a case of longevity of the cheaper option. Not knowing what brand of dish and box is available installed for €180, it's hard to say how good or bad they are.
