Wireless Woes - fixed pc connection with wireless laptop?

    OK, so I have a 2mb BT broadband connection coming in through my Zyxel Prestige 600 series modem. This was plugged straight into my PC as of yesterday.

    I wanted to set up a wireless connection for a laptop which I have so I bought a Netgear wireles router. Ive connected the ZyXel through to the the Netgear which is then plugged straight into the back of my computer.

    so now the computer is working fine and connects to the net but when I try to set up a wireless network for the laptop, the main PC tells me that no wireless adapter is available for connection.

    And im not too sure what to do?

    do I have to plug the router into the back of the laptop to establish the wireless, or can i do it through the PC? Does that make sense?

    Need to clarify this slightly. When you say "main PC" do mean the laptop or the desktop? And the last bit makes no sense.

    sorry i was in a bit of a rush earlier!

    anyway yeah i meant desktop when i said main pc

    and i suppose what im trying to say is can i have this set up:

    modem > router > desktop
    ................v
    ............Wireless
    ................v
    ............ Laptop

    And if so, do i have to set up the the wireless network through the desktop. i.e. not have to seperately configure the laptop to the routers settings? Does that make any sense?? Thanks!

    Ok so you have your PC working with a wired conn straight from the modem.
    So that's sorted. Sweet no hassle. Leave that mofo be.
    Now for the wireless router. Using a net cable chuck that bad boy into the router
    Is it turned on? Are you seeing blinking lights as per the manual for said wireless router? Can you log on to the wireless router home page? Is your wireless card turned on on your laptop (Ie physically, via switch, or is it enabled in control panel)? Have you attempted to detect the network from windows? Are you picking up a valid IP address?

    Also that wireless router uses static IP routing. Thats probably a good thing though as you can config a static IP address on your PC.

    There are a lot of things you can check and work through by just googling wireless troubleshooting TBH and overall it would benefit you to glean how to fix this from those too. But good luck to you. And dont waste any time ringin feckin' BT. Only thing they are good at is getting you drunk, sleeping with you, not calling back and then charging you over the odds for it.

    Best thing to do is to put the modem into bridge mode and let the router handle the WAN connection and assigning IP addresses (see FAQ for instructions on bridging). To configure the wireless on the router, connect it to the desktop using a cable and follow the manual on how to configure it. Probably an idea to initially set the wireless up without any security and get it working first. Then you can go back and switch on WEP/WPA.
