at the moment i'm i nthe process of looking for a new job.

on Monday i had a half day and i met 3 agencies and had two job interviews.

i'm back in tomorrow for a second interview in one of them.

i've a pain i nmy arse trying to think of excuses for time off here and there already (especially since my attendance is always bang-on) so my question is.... is it really such a bad idea to hand in my notice before i get a job?? if i hand in my notice isn't the boss obliged to give me time off?? and its hardly likely im not going to get a job in a month?
people keep telling me i'd be mad to give my notice before im secure. Am i really though??

Yes would be. Unless you don't have no commitments (live with parents , no expenses...etc...etc))

Can you not just ask for a days annual leave and then arrange all the interviews on the same day rather than a half day today another half day tomorrow? You don't need to give a reason to your boss.

And no your boss is not obliged to give you time off if you hand in your notice.

CAn you not ask the agencies/companies to interview you at 8am, or 5.30pm? This means you won't have to miss much work. Most places are fairly obliging about doing this.

I had a couple of weeks of doing interviews last October and it was hard to fit them in around work. Any one that was physically close to work I arranged coincide with my lunch. The others I asked for interviews at 8am or 6pm and made excuses if left a little early or came in a bit late.

Most places are decent on this. Most of my interviews i do between 8 and 9am to get them out of the way and usually means i'm just a little bit late for work but its pretty flexible where i am now so its ok.

Or if you work near the interview you could go on lunch.

Indeed, most places understand that you're not going to tell your boss that you're looking for another job.

The big problem with handing in notice before you get a job offer is that you may panic. You have no offers coming in, you're due to finish in two weeks and you start to worry that you'll finish without another job lined up. So you start to do interviews for any old crap and end up accepting a job offer that's far below what you originally wanted.

Unless your current job is a big pile of crap, then sticking with it will give you time to pick and choose your jobs.

You should expect questions like this, the one above is designed to see if you have pride in your work and like the feeling of accomplishment as this is something that helps you to have motivation. Think of a time when you were working on a project / assisting a co-worker / helping a customer and you did a little bit extra and it paid off. Prepare an answer that is plausible without being corny.

i had the same problem when i was trying to arrange interviews in Galway while working in Dublin!

I found that most employers/agencies are actually quite flexible.

I had to take 4 full days off work so i had to take annual leave.

talk to the employers and or the agencies and see what they say.

regarding the biggest achievement: there has to be something in your career you are proud of? Whether it be getting a project done on time or helping a customer!

    hope it all works out
