Fan problem on Dell Inspiron 530

    Hey all.

I recently puchased a new Dell Inspiron 530 and I couldn't be more happier with it. The only problem I seem to be having (and it's not really a problem) is that whenever I reboot the machine, the fan comes on as normal, then cuts off as normal and then starts up again and doesn't stop. Like I said, it's not causing me any problems, apart from the noise factor (it's quite noisy)

The only way I can reboot without this happening, is to shut down completely (for 30 secs or so) and then boot it up again.

So basically, how do I fix it?

Might it be the fan for the graphics card? If so, you could try controlling it with RivaTuner.

The 530 fans will spin-up for a period of approx 1.5 seconds on POST and then spin down to a low level.
If your fans are remaining on, you need to figure out which one it is, and then call support.
To eliminate the video card fan, if fitted, remove the card.
Otherwise you only have three other fans in teh system - processor, Power supply and rear chassis.
Disconneccting each of there individually will help identify the noisy one.

If it's the case fan(s), they are probably controlled by the motherboard. Have you seen if there's any BIOS updates for your system?

Well it sounds like there's a fault in the way the fans are being controlled after a reboot. They are controlled by the BIOS unless using some other software like SpeedFan, which can't operate until you log into Windows anyway.

Yeah, well it is only after a reboot that this occurs. I'm not a techy person when it comes to this sort of thing, so I'm very reluctant to open up the case. I think I'll try the BIOS update thingy. Thanks guys.

That won't do any damage, will it?

I don't believe it will do anything... This specific BIOS update does not fix any issues with the thermals/fans in the system.

    Fixes/Enhancements:
    1. Add support to new Intel CPUs

Ah. Looks like I'll be ringing Dell then.

    What did? The BIOS update?

Those changelogs don't always list all the changes, so maybe this problem was fixed at some stage? Or maybe the flashing of the BIOS just coincidentally resolved some weird error state
