    Here's a strange one...

came up in the pub on Saturday night and no one could give an answer.

Does anyone know why the area over Johns Bridge (on the John St side) is known as the Continent?

I've googled it, and found people refering to it as the Continent, but not any reason why!

    Groan!! :D ^^

Calling John's parish "the Continent" is very common among old stock Kilkenny ... the only explanation I have ever been given is that it was so dubbed because it was "across the water" from the rest of Kilkenny.

As a non-Kilkennyman, tho', it is perfectly possible that I was being wound up ... ;)

Btw, the area up around Patrick's is known as "the village" ...
