PC Problem

Yesterday evening my PC turned its self off, i dont know how or why. At first i thought a virus or Hard drive failure but it seems its not either. this coinsided with my net connection cutting of at the same time.

now i cannot turn the PC on with the case power switch and have to use the switch on the PSU which is not good.

When i shutdown windows it doesnt turn the PSU off it shuts down as windows normally would but the PSU remains on with fans spinning and again i have to use PSU switch to turn it off. Also the PC wouldnt stay on for very long a while a ago it would just sorta go into a black screen mode with the PSU still on this seems to be ok now after i tweeked about with settings here and there in the BIOS.

At this point it seems a PSU or motherboard fault can you help?

Seems like the psu to me. If you have a spare one lying around give it a try, or even borrow one from a friend. If not just pick up a cheap one from somewhere like pcworld if your in a rush. Otherwise order a decent speced once from komplett or elera or dabs.

Was there any lightning ? Or power surges/outages ? As it is possible for the current to travel down the phone line into yoru router/modem and then onto the computer.

    not that im aware of.

i put in a old PSU into the PC and the old PSU behavied as normal ie let me turn it on and off from the PC case so my PSU is faulty.

When i put in the current PSU the pc came on itself without me turning it on.

Its the 2nd time now that one of those Jeantech 450watt PSU's has failed on me there complete ****e. PC world crap and i think i cant take it back as the receipt is dated 2006.

im going to order a new PSU if you guys think thats it? Any good decent brand names i should look out for (ill be using komplett.ie)

PC seems stable atm and hasnt crashed in 6 hours.

Only brands i trust fully are corsair, seasonic, tagan and pc power & cooling. Hiper is also a great cheap brand. I have one thats 4 years old, still happily running a core duo pc with a 8800GT and a few hdds.

Yeah all new power supllies I come accross have molex connectors, if in doubt check spec of psu for how many it has :), Also modular PSUs allow you to add possibly more molxes if sata power isnt neccesary

Most new PSU's have at least 6 molex connections
