hey not sure if this is the right place for this so feel free to move...I am due to go on maternity leave in April and will be the first person in the company to do so as far as anyone can remember (i'm the only female worker who isn't family). Does anyone know what I should do about my wages? As in, do I approach my boss and ask if he intends paying me while I'm out or wait for him to come to me - I know he's under no obligation to do so and also, if he does pay me, am I under any obligation to come back afterwards? Thanks for any help:)

I would approach him and say that you were curious what the company's policy was on wages during maternity leave. He may tell you straight up that he's not paying or he may have already thought about it and will tell you or he may not have thought about it at all and will take some time to.

You're under no obligation to return to work after maternity leave, but you must give notice in the usual way - so if you have to give a month's notice, give him notice at the start of your last month of maternity leave.

Strongly consider this before you do though. If your employer pays you during maternity leave and you decide to not come back, he may choose to not give you a reference. If you go back to work for a month or two, it will at least look like you tried to return to work but found it too much hassle.

Thanks seamus, had asked a few people and no-one was 100% sure! Will approach him in the next while and see what he says. Thanks for the heads up about not going back if he pays me,hadn't thought about that

If he decides to top up your maternity pay he can claw back the top up if you do not return (he needs to let you know beforehand though).
