    Folks,

Anyone running this engine with any % vegetable oil?

I'm considering a 10% mix of off the shelf oil in the tank.

    Pros/Cons?

    Thanks,

    M.

Dont think you can do it with TDI engines. Something to do with the injectors.

Course you can, it depends on the Fuel pump, if its Bosch then its a go, if its a Lucas your screwed.

    10% mix should be ok

Google for other, mainly UK, sites that cover this topic. You will get very good advice from people who have experience of SVO etc.

Yep, dont even bother, it might only be 10% but it will most lightly clog up your injectors/fuel lines/fuel filter etc over time. It will make starting the car more difficult as well.

What'll you save in the short term? (1.20-0.70)*.1 = 5cent per litre. Assuming the car does 45mpg (10miles/litre), you'll have saved about €1000 after 20,000miles, by which time you'll have spent double that changing injectors etc.

If you do want to mess around with veg oil get yourself an old non-direct injection car, slap a fuel heater on to the fuel line and put a 2nd small diesel tank with diesel in it for starting/warming up the car. Hey presto, a car that'll run on 100% veg oil.

    DO NOT DO THIS.

The TDI engine will need a full conversion.

Check elsbett.com or ring the lads in ecocar.ie

    They are PD's not TDI's

The injectors will clog up with veg oil which can't atomise at the high pressure's involved in modern engines.

Also, most of the people on that site have made some modifications... usually home made jobs.

Its actually the exact opposite, the fuel filter has to be changed 3 times in 6 months if you run on SVO, it cleans all the deposits off the inside of the engine left by the Diesel.

Ireland is too cold to run on SVO without modification.

However it is true that the PD engine will not run very well on Vege oil mix. Biodiesel is fine though.
