Croatia(Dubrovnik) questions

    Hi,
I've read a lot of previous posts here about Croatia and heard a lot of good things!

Going to go early Sept this year and am trying my darndest to make it a sun/visiting(tours etc) holiday. I will be going with my girlfriend.

Does staying in Dubrovnik town serve both of my needs, i.e. beach and good town with loads of restaurant/bars etc?

Or would i be better to be based ~15kms in say; Cavtat, where we could do the sun holiday in Cavtat and town based holiday commute to Dubrovnik? Bearing in mind we'd be a bit locko i'm sure coming back from Dubrovnik to Cavtat some nights, are taxi's sound, cheap, no run-arounds etc?

    Cheers!

stayed there a few years ago....would recommend the lapad peninsula to stay...only a couple of mile outside dubrovnik...loads of buses too....you'd nearly walk it if u were stuck too

Holidayed in Dubrovnik 6 Years ago. Stayed in Lapad - a mixed holiday/residential area a quick taxi or a 25 minute walk from the old town of Dubrovnik. There was a nice beach available locally, and you could get boats to locations further afield. bring flopflops - the beaches locally are stony.

Really loved the place - must go back sometime. Great place for a couple. wiill post later when i remember more - waiting for coffee to kick in.

Yup, I would recommend Lapad also. Beach down the road and a quick jaunt into town. Buses run until well into the night, so getting around won't be an issue.
Unless things have changed since I've been there, the beach is a pebble beach, just something to note. Then again, all beach there are, unless the are man made ones!

Love, love, loved Dubrovnik, would go back in a heartbeat!

I heard the lakes in plitivic I think it is are amazing . Think you need to get a bus from slpilt to them . There is also a place you can get to from split call Mostar have a look at it here http://www.gregstravels.com/Images/MostarBridge.jpg

There is a lot to do in Dubrovnik itself. The food is superb and the tours around the walls and city itself are interesting. The beaches are rockey and stony but the water is clear and nice. People watching in the square at nights is great. There are tours into neighbouring countries but having done all of them none of them stand out apart from Sarajevo. You can nip up to Medjugorje if thats your cup of tea.

    Hi guys,

Just wondering-would Dubrovnik be a good spot to go on holiday with a 3 year old? Myself and my husband have always wanted to go there and are thinking about getting away in September with our daughter who will be 3 by then?

    Many thanks

I'd say it'd be a fine place. There's no beach mind, it's a small enough city so I don't know what would keep her occupied. I stayed in one spa hotel there and we just hung out there with a few trips to the old town (I'd been there before so wasn't there for sightseeing).

One thing to remember is that Dubrovnik is expensive! My hotel was about €70 pp a night, the same as you'd pay in Dublin, and meals out were around Dublin prices too (more in old town than outside it). Check hotels and things online before you book!).

Thanks for the reply Dory, I appreciate that.
I think a beach would be important, we've been to Spain a couple of times and she loves the sand and messing about! Ddin't relaise it was an expensive place either!! I think we'll have to leave Dubrovnik for the time being, but it's definately on our list of places to visit!!

    Thanks again.

Just to tag onto this, anyone any comments on an itinerary like this:
    (Honeymoon)

Fly to Dubrovnik 3-4 nights, beach pool and old town maybe Lapad.
    Bus to Split 1-2 nights
    Boat to Hvar 4 nights

    Fly out of Split

don't think you can go wrong with that, the honeymooners that have gone to croatia always seem to love it and your probably not spending too long in each place

Sounds great. Dubrovnik to Split is about 4 hours on a bus, and if it takes the coast road the view in incredible. Just be careful about budgeting. I met quite a few people who went to Croatia expecting Eastern European prices, I found it more expensive than Spain.

Hvar is one of the most beautiful places ever. The clear water is to die for.

I flew into Zadar with Ryanair stayed for 2 nights, then to Split by bus for a few nights then onto Hvar for 4 nights with short ferry from Split. We then got a ferry from Hvar to Dubrovnik and stayed there for a few nights. Aerlingus flew us home from there.

So easy to get around in Croatia.

Sounds like a better plan, save us having to fly in and out of Dubrovnik.
Is there a Ferry from Hvar to Dubrovnik couldn't find one and others said there was none.

Yeah there is a ferry from Stari Grad a town on Hvar Island.
    http://www.hvarinfo.com/hvar-ferries/#7

Here's a link. They don't go every day but you can always check in the information place in hvar town. There is a bus the brings you from hvar town to stari Grad or you can get a taxi.

Ferry takes a few hours but it is a lovely journey.
