orrrrrrrr could anyone recommend a company? Myself and the missus will be in NZ from august to september :D.

    Cheers,

Rented from Budget last time at Auckland Airport. They were fine - slightly less expensive than Hertz. Thrifty were cheaper but they didn't have the car I wanted.

All of them found a reason to give me a better price than online (vouchers, price matches etc.) when I phoned, and Thrifty happily and instantly undercut any other prices I'd been given when I called (before discovering they didn't have the car I wanted available...).

August is low-ish season, so you have potential to haggle...

Excesses seem to be a bit on the high side in NZ - about NZ$3000, and excess reduction can be about NZ$30+/day, so if that sort of thing worries you I'd suggest you buy excess insurance before you go - I used http://www.insurance4carhire.com/ , which was about €75 a year.

    Have fun roadtrippin'!

I rented a LWB Pajero with Hertz last year at peak season, 3 weeks cost me about NZ$1500.

I paid about nz$5 a day to bring the Excess down to nz$250, good job as well as a feckin' valet in a hotel dinged the back door on my first day. Hertz wouldn't deal with the Hotel who admitted liability and I had to pay .. 13months on I am still waiting on my refund from the hotel

If you plan to do a good bit of driving, especially on the south island get something with a fairly decent engine, some of the 'main' roads are tough and uncomfortable if you don't have the horses under the bonnet !
