Camera equipment on planes?

Hey guys, i'm flying off to Frankfurt next week and i was wondering if camera equipment is okay to take on as hand luggage? More specifically my Canon 350D spare battery, memory cards, 35-128mm lens and my 50mm prime?

All fine. It is advisable to keep equipment of that nature with you.

The issues tend to revolve around monopods and tripods through security.

I think somebody said something about spare batteries (when not in the body) not allowed unless dispatched with your main luggage

anyway, no big deal, just put them with your socks!

last week i brought a D80, spare lens, charger spare battery and a few other things onto the plane with me, had no problems at all.,

The Americans I think have some funny idea about that. I'd forgotten but since I have no intention of going there for a long while, that's not an issue for me. Batteries went to Morocco okay for me before Christmas anyway and was xrayed in both Dublin/Paris/Casablanca.

I flew over january with my hand luggage (camera bag) jammed to the hilt, spare batteries, cards, portable harddrive etc, i was asked to empty the bag, they re scanned each item, said "thanks mate" and off i went no problems.
You should be fine with everything, and I'd never put my camera in any check in baggage, you may never see it again.

Thanks again for the replies, there was no way the camera gear would go in the hold, I generally dont like the idea of throwing away 1 grands worth of equipment.

What's the story with a tripod - heading to Paris in the summer and hoping to bring my tripod but I booked hand luggage only with Ryanair. Is this a no no or is it allowed once it's in the hand luggage?

Discretion of security staff and no clearly defined policy. I had to check in a monopod in Rennes last summer because they would not allow me on the plane with it. That being said...I got it through security in Dublin and Lisbon...so it's difficult to call.

Thanks - not sure what to do, really want to take a few night time snaps of Paris and a tripod is essential but it kills me to pay €28 to book a bag into the hold.

Spare lithium ion batteries are not allowed in the carry on for flights that go through the US I remember reading a while ago...

In August I brought my D80, two batteries, charger, lenses, cards etc. all on as hand luggage to San Francisco. Didn't get any hassle in either direction apart from having to take the camera out and scan it separately.

Like other people say though, could be down to the guy on the scanner that day

Actually it's in checked luggage, i.e. in the hold, that spare batteries are not allowed. It's still perfectly acceptable to bring spare batteries on with you in your hand luggage, provided you isolate the terminals.

I believe this was the case of the exploding LI-ION batteries on laptops. There were a few high profile cases where batteries manufactured by Sony went kaboom without notice. So the deal was they would make you check them in.... so when they went kaboom you couldn't get at them to tackle the fire

I came from Las Vegas to Dublin through Philli with a 400D, kit lens, Sigma lens and spare betterys in my laptop bag which I carried with me and had no issues what so ever.

Yeah... should be fine with all that. The only make you take out laptops to be scanned in most airports..
