I'd go with Seagate one as I've had better expierience with seagates than western digitals... Seems a good price aswell, Not sure what brand hard disk iomega use so can't comment on that

Running 2 WD Mybooks, 1 WD passport and no problems. Have friends with the Mybooks as well no problems. Quality drive.

I think the iomega drives use WB hdd's. But id go for the seagate or WD just incase the iomega comes with an hitachi drive.

    Another +1 for the MyBook

I ordered the SeaGate from pixmania but I think I'll cancel.
They debited my card yet I just got an email requesting a scan of a utility bill and my passport before they process the order
    WTF?
First time I ever, ever gave a company like that my business and they expect me to email them that crap.

Its apparently to do with a credit check. But i dont believe that one bit. I think its absolute crap that you pay by a credit card and they ask for that. Saying that they have never asked me for anything wheni have bought from them.

It wasn't even a credit card it was my laser DEBIT card.
    Absolute ****e.
Thing is I live in the family home so I don't have a utility bill.
I had a scan of my passport in my hard drive already so I sent that to them.
If they don't like it they can lump it.
All in all, I'm not using them again.
It's just that they debited my card and it might be hassle getting them to refund.

Ive been having the same debate myself recently and I stumbled upon the seagate on komplett for a better (albeit miniscual) saving. Plus I prefer dealing with Komplett. have used pixmania but am not a fan at all.

I got an external hard drive from pixmania a few months ago. It spontaeneously broke shortly after I had copied a couple of hundred gb of data onto it. Pixmania refused to refund and suggested I got in touch with the manufacturer. (which I haven't done yet). I dunno maybe that would be a standard response from most online retailers but it puts me off buying again from them, and reading about that credit check crap reaffirms this.

I discovered that a lot of these particular drives broke spontaeneously soon after purchase, and that they've stopped producing them as a result. Funny because it was a maxtor drive and I have an old 140gig external maxtor drive which is in a metal case and it works fine despite numerous moves and even being dropped on the floor.

Maxtors don't have a great reliability record tbh, Although it was poor form on Pixmanias part, it should of course be covered under warrenty with seller, tbh if maxtor send out a new unit sell it on ebay and get another tbh, I would hate to have to trust a maxtor :D , If i was going for a external I'd buy an enclosure and 3.5" sata drive seperate and use that instead, means if drive externally starts acting up you can boot it as a sata drive and back up before replacement if possible :) Seagate SATAs have a 3 year warrenty aswell as Samsung I belive, not sure if externals have same warrenty

Sent off a scan of my credit card bill and my passport to pixmania yesterday at this time. Still no reply.
I'm absolutely livid. They debit my card, then demand those documents and don't even have the common courtesy to even acknowledge they received the document.
I sent them a really strong-worded email there.
    This is an absolute outrage.

Edit: I just got an email from them telling me that they haven't received the documents via email and now want me to fax them.

What an absolute joke. I emailed them to the email address they specified.
I emailed them back instructing them to cancel the order and to refund my payment.
How the f*ck can they debit people's accounts then spin this bullsh1t on them?
I'm actually worried now that they have my money, what can I do if they don't give it back?
I can take it up with Laser can't I?

Your covered as long as its over 100€ i believe. And also covered by that 14 day no quibble money back thing too.

I've also been looking for an external hard drive since last weekend.
My WD MyBook packed it in on Friday last with 12months use. Bad sectors and IO errors.
Komplett have agreed to take it back though, but I'm on the hunt for two new ones. One will be used as a backup of the other. I've opted to get two different brands.

My confidence in WD is a little shaken. I bought it in Feb 07 and I have seen a lot of comments put on the internet since, from users having similar problems.

I too was looking at the Seagate FreeAgent 500GB USB2.0. But again, I googled for reviews/comments. It seems that it has no fan and it gets very hot. And seems to have poor reliability.

The Seagate Maxtor OneTouch 4 500GB USB seems to have similar issues. But a lot of people don't have much confidence in Maxtor.

Which brought me back to Boards.ie to see if anyone here could suggest one.

They seem to have refunded me anyway.
found the same drive on dabs and komplett but neither company accepts Laser.
    Any other ideas?
