The pleasure of getting a bone thrown to em by someone who wants something for nothing...mac i'm sure you'll have a pile of bands looking to get on your bill...but until promoters treat bands with more respect than just "bums on seats" generators, nothing's gonna change in town, your just the newest in a long line of em.....your in a position to change things (i.e being popular wit the bands as well as the bar owners)

    just an opinion

Not sure what you expect from promoters spitterung. They hire a venue and try to fill it by getting bands in that can generate a crowd. Most promoters reward you for bringing in a crowd of more than 20 or 30. If they just got the bands that had no crowd, they would be out of pocket about 200 each night for putting on a show.

I'm not a promoter by the way, but a musician!!

Not all bands should be paid. It is definitely directly proportionate to the quality of the band and the amount of people they can draw. If a band has the quality and the pull factor they'll be able to demand a fee no problems. In my opinion, people who think otherwise are living the rockstar mindset without the rockstar music to go along with it.

I've been playing in the professional scene for years and I always get paid, as does anyone who plays with me. You don't have to be a "rockstar" to demand payment for your entertainement services. The only time I don't get paid is when I do a charity event. and I believe thats what the op is after, charity.

If there is a demand for your music, then yeah you'll get paid. If you're some new band just looking to get their first gig from anywhere, then its fair to say that the band needs the promoter way more than the promoter needs the band.

Hi, i'd just like to add my little two cents on this issue...
There are a lot of "promoters" about that are just in it to make easy money for themselves, and i'd urge any band that's looking into playing one of these "showcase" 4-5 band nights in dublin to express a great deal of caution before playing them! I'm speaking from years of experience dealing with both the good and the bad!

Any muppet out there can go and hire a venue for a night, stick a message on boards or bebo or myspace looking for bands and get a gig going.
The differences between these con men and actual promoters are huge.

1 - Don't take these gigs unless you are sure that the gig will be adequately advertised by the promoter - (he/she is the one that stands to make the most money from the event and therefore the onus is on them to provide SOME kind of advertising - the bands will always have their regular crowd of mates at these gigs, and the few that will come along from the bands personal advertising - bebo etc)
To simplify - The Event is the Promoters Event - not yours. You have been hired to provide entertainment for THE EVENT.

2 - If a "promoter" decides that the band will be paid in relation to numbers - heed caution. Some guys will tell you that you will be paid once you bring more than eg - 30 people - band gets paid from punter 31 onwards that declares they are there to see said band.
Use your cop on here - 5 bands x 30 tickets x €10 = €1500 for the "promoter" - minus €150 (engineer) - €500 (venue - or less) = €850 in this cowboys arse pocket before he has to pay a band a cent.
    - Some promoters are much fairer about the way they conduct this policy, use your cop on to sort the con men from the pro's.

3 - Backline. If you're asked to provide backline - CHARGE THE PROMOTER FOR IT. Whats the point in hiring out your gear to him free of charge when he's making money from it? It also leaves you in the position where you must be the first band in and last band out, and not to mention the danger of damage to your gear by other musicians.

4 - If the promoter is supplying the backline - Find out before the gig what gear he/she is supplying and look to see photos of it if necessary. There's nothing worse than playing a gig on gear that packs in half way through a set, or worse, the likes of cymbal stands etc that have no felts/sleeves etc and could possibly damage €100's worth of cymbals.

So, any bands looking for gigs, please heed this advice before offering yourself to fatten anybody's wallet. There are plenty of reputable promoters out there (Dermot Lambert[garageland], Trevor Dietz[radiator], Gigsmart are a few), but learn to sort the good from the bad.
I know a gig in the Doran's or The Village or Whelans sounds like a great idea to a lot of bands starting out, but you should never do it unless you're going to be treated professionally and fairly.
