Just finishing college this year and am interested in joining the naval service. I just wanna hear from existing members what they think of their careers in the naval service, do they enjoy their work, what are the standards like, career prospects etc. Cheers!

Hi lads, I'm in since 2004 and happy enough, although I had a trade before I joined which made life easier.

You didn't mention whether you were going for a cadet-ship or going the enlisted route.

Have a good think about it, a lot of young lads join up thinking that they'll be Navy Seals or SBS flying around in ribs armed to the teeth.

This couldn't be further from the truth, it gets very boring at sea, long patrols a lot of the time with no phone coverage, bad weather, heavy seas, sea sickness and there is only one Naval Base in Ireland and its in Cork, so if you're not from cork be prepared to do a lot of travelling.

Not trying to put lads off, they are just some of the bad points, but there's plenty of good points as well.

The money is OK, good time off, good opportunities, apprenticeships etc, do a bit of travelling, although its mainly patrolling around Ireland.

You'll find the usual info on military.ie but that doesnt really give you an idea of life at sea, you really would want to talk to someone whos in the Navy a while to get a good idea.

With the Country the way it is at the moment I dont think they will be recruiting for a while, I could be wrong.

Good luck whatever ye decide, any questions fire away???

haha yeah, join the Irish Navy, fall overboard and get stung by nettles:rolleyes:

The Orla and Ciara go to anchor every night, they were built for patrolling rivers in Hong Kong, not 4 week patrols.

Depends on the weather aswell, the main task we perform is fishery patrols, obviously when the weather is bad (heavy seas) its too dangerous to board any trawlers, then the ship goes to anchor.

When at anchor, there are firefighting/damage control exercises, briefs and so on, it also gives us time to carry out any maintainance that is needed.

Yes alot of the time we get shoreleave and go for a few pints:D, but theres no lyins the following morning:(
