Garda College - Sport Facilities

I was just wondering about sport facilities in Garda College.

From looking at the wbesite, I know that they have a swimming pool, tennis courts, golf course, not to mention various pitches for rugby, football etc.

What I was wondering is - do you actually get to use them while you there? Can you go for a round of golf, a swim or game of tennis after lectures, no problem?

And if you can, is it usually busy?

Ok to start, all facilities are very good!

Round of golf - yes, i believe there is a small charge but i cant confirm as i never used it! (Nor will i ever)

Swim - Yes, Monday - Wednesday the pool is open for about 2-2 1/2 hrs in the evenings.

Tennis, squash, football, gym - Everyday after lectures, not a bother! All free. Equipment if provided for you aswell.

In relation to them being busy.... you usually get what your looking for fairly handy!

    Hope this helps.

I heard there are also classes such as aerobics etc provided in the evenings. Is this the case?

    That's pretty good.

What about Table Tennis? I'm dead serious, really interested, used to play in the proper league back home. Never got a chance to play here really, so I'm just wondering if they would have a table in templemore?

Is there any self defence clubs? Such as Aikido?

Also, kinda OT but was just thinking of it there. Do you actually get payed when in the college? Untill now I had presumed you were payed as a trainee guard, but now that I realize your just attending a college and doing a degree (same as anywhere else) you proberly dont get payed.... If thats the case, how do you support yourself - part time job?

you get a personal allowence of €190ish for all 5 phases of training and when in college €70 odd for food and accom that €120ish when stationed . i think there is a boot and un iform maintenance per week also.

open to correction on all these figures:D

You should probably start a new thread about it to be honest.

But in short, college was just refurbished, so it;'s not too shabby. You get your own room, with basics in it (sink, wardrobe, desk etc.), and share a bathroom with 3 others. As far as I know they don't accomodate families. You have to be back in college by 11 p.m. Mon - Thu, then you can leave on Friday at 5 and don;t have to be back till 11 p.m. on Sunday. If you have a family , you don't have to be beack till Monday morning.
