I just got a new dell XPS 420 and after some teething problems its running great

However, it is REALLY loud. there is always a loud humming noise, even when I'm not running any programs. Its pretty annoying, is there anyway to stop this?

is it the fan thats loud?

I got a dell a while back and the heat sink wasnt glued onto the processor properly so the fan was very loud trying to cool it. it began shutting itself down until I found the problem.

It doesnt soundn like a fan, i think it might be the hard drive but I'm not sure as im not really familiar with computer parts

If you're running Vista and are getting sick of all that background churning of your hard disk -- turn off indexing. It infuriates me when my computer starts doing stuff I didn't command it to do. I turned off indexing and the amount of background churning decreased significantly.

just type "indexing" into the search bar. hit enter. go to "modify" and untick all the boxes until there are no folders shown in the bottom half of the window anymore.

As I said I already turned it off, but its still loud as hell

I bought an extra internal fan and these 2:

    Antivibe mounting kit

    Hard disk antivibe:

Noise levels reduced dramatically. Some months later my Dell Dimension 5150 started turning itself on and off so my original problem may have been something else. I thought the amount of heatsink compound used by Dell was minimal.

I'm not very experienced in this area so would defer to anyone with more knowledge.

So its not the hard drive, that leaves two other things it could be. A loose casefan / cpu hsf assembly. Or possibly the psu. If these are not screwed in tightly they can vibrate and cause the humming noise you describe. Best bet would be to open up the case and use your ears to follow the noise. And try and secure whatever is vibrating.

I cant open the case - its a Dell XPS 420 and the case is held in by something that are not quite screws, my screwdriver couldn't budge them, any ideas?

Just call XPS technical support and they will try to indentify the cause.Tell them you don't know much about computers you are beginner etc. and DELL will send engineer to your house. It's the fastest way to have DELL computer fixed.
I have XPS 420 and it's really silent (with 8800GTX)
