I want to travel to the USA later in the year. I'm thinking of taking 6 months to a year to travel around a bit, see New York, Boston, California, Vegas and the main place I want to visit is Hawaii.

I'm a bit clueless how to get things in motion, I know I need to apply for Visas etc. I would appreciate any and all information, help and advice that's on offer from anyone who knows how to go about this.

    Thanks,

Tourist visa is 90 days, so you'd have to leave and come back.

Feck, I suppose I could do that, if I come bac I can apply for longer Visa?
Or is there any way to apply for a longer one.
I know someone living in Atlanta so I would have a contact there.

Go to mexico or canada for a few days and then re-enter the USA.

When you go to Canada or Mexico make sure to surrender the green I94W to the Canadians or to the US Customs in the case of Mexico.

When you go to re-enter you will complete a new I94W and you will be good for another 3 months.

A friend of mine had a bar job in new york years ago for 3 years. For some reason every 88 days she would fly to canada, wait in the airport and fly back. I mean no other illegal did this but she said if she got caught she didnt want to be banned from the US for life.

So in 2006, here third time flying into Newark, here third time getting the same US immigration officer :D He told her "what your doing is not illegal (he didnt know she was working but probably suspected it) But after this 90 days is over, go home for a couple of years, because if you try this again you wont be ever allowed in!" So she went back to NY for shopping in December not a bother.

As you'll be just re-entering once you'll be fine.

Charlie, if you are gonna go for 6 months or more it may be an idea to buy a car and drive, It'll probably work out the same as flying all around the US but you'll get to see a lot more of it.

I'm going to America myself for five months, if you want to avoid the hassle of having to leave and re-enter the country after 3 months you could apply for a B-2 tourist visa from the US embassy -

    http://dublin.usembassy.gov/tourist_business.html

I got one of these, its a bit of a pain getting it, you have to call a 1550 number to arrange an interview and then you have to attend an interview in the embassy where you will need to provide details such as:

Bank statements that prove you can support yourself financially for the duration of your stay.
Contact details of friends/relatives you can tell them you are staying with when you are there

Its approx 100euro to get the visa. My interview was pretty handy, wasn't asked too many questions, he didn't even ask me how long I wanted the visa for he just issued me with one for 12 months even though I only needed it for 5 months

Buying a car might be a little expensive, especially since cars depreciate so quickly. A lease for 6 months will also be very expensive. You also won't be able to take it to Hawaii without spending an arm and a leg. Renting one might be nice if you are in an area that does not have public transit, but it's about $40 US per day if you get a compact and are you are over 25 years old. Also, the same car might be $80 per day if you rent from an airport, as opposed to a regular location.

As far as the VISA goes, it depends on your passport. Irish can be in the US for up to 90 days without a visa. So you can probably leave and come back again, or just stay in the country and only get the visa for the last half of your trip. I would check with the embassy just in case though.

    Check out the details here...
