Hi I have wired broadband from eircom. I have a sony vaio laptop which is not wireless. I would like to upgrade my system to wireless. As far as I know, I need first to get a wireless modem and then I need a wireless card for the back of my laptop. Is this correct ? I know that the wireless modems are around 90 euro and the cards can be up to 40. I was looking at bt ones in ebay and they are only around 25 euro. Would these work with my system ? Is there much installation involved in this stuff ? Your help in this would be appreciated.

    ;)

Ok, there's a wireless forum over there somewhere that would be more appropriate for this

Anyway, what make/model is the Eircom DSL modem? The vast majority of them already have wireless built into them. Same with the laptop - what make model? Unless it is a very old laptop (+4 years), it will have wireless already built in.

So, chances are, you need to buy nothing.

My modem is a netopia and my sony laptop is around 5 years old and have checked it out and it does not have wireless.

It should be possible to get antennae for the Netopia to enable it for wireless, if it's not too old. For the laptop the easiest method is to get an external USB wireless adapter. You can find them everywhere really. I got one in Argos last year, but most computer shops will sell them. Something like this:

If you don't want a big yoke sticking out of your laptop though you can get a PCMCIA wifi card, might be a bit handier. If you have a PCMCIA slot of course.
