    hi guys.

i'm an irish international student living in sweden along with another girl. we had one internet connection in the house which meant going online one at a time so i bought a wireless router, a dlink dir-301. it's working fine when we connect using wires but i can't get the wireless to work, with security on or off. i get the 'windows has detected an IP address conflict' and then only get a local connection. i'm running vista off an HP Pavillion dv2000 and as it's locked up in a box i can't tell what modem we have. Laptop is set to automatically set the IP address and my housemate is having a similar problem on an older machine.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you setting static IP addresses?

    Edit:

scratch that. If the modem is in a box, how are you getting access to it? The router should be connected by it's WAN port to the modem.

Your router should give u a different IP for your laptop, so you wont get the conflict....

You gota put ur Internet settings on the router - the IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway and the DNS settings, so thats the basestation and then your router will assign an IP pool so various IP's can connect to the one source, It should all be in the router settings handy enough.... check ur manual its usually something like "192.168.1.2" which u type into ur web browser then u can edit the router settings n stuff there...

but thats only for a static ip adress or somethin i think but meh try it

Im sure people will give u some better info, i only set up the wireless connection i have here with no help and through trial and error really, but eventually got it in the ene

i'm using an automatic IP address on the laptop. i'm getting access to the modemthrough a connection in the wall which feeds from the moden which is in a locked container that i can see from here!! the router is connected to it through the same port i was connecting the laptop to as well when i was plugging that into the wall.

this is a screen grab of the internet settings page.

i'm not sure about the PPPoE thing as I don't know what it is. All i do know is that we've been told to accept automatic IP addressing or the internet won't work at all.

Hard to tell until we know what kind of modem it is and who the provider is.

If you know who the provider is we can take a guess. Sounds like it's some form of cable modem similar to NTL, though it could also be something like the routers Smart have in some estates.

If the laptop is working when plugged in the LAN port, the router should be working okay. Have you set an SSID and encryption type and passphrase/key on the routers wireless config?

It's similar to the system used by Smart alright. How did you set the wireless on the router though?

i tried doing it without security because initially i thought that was the problem and i can go back and change it using the CD that came with it

edit: once i get it up and running i'll run an encryption on it, either WEP or WPA-PSK

Very bad idea to set it like that. Set it to use WPA and set a good long key.

thats the plan in the end spear, for now i'm just looking for a wireless WAN connection as opposed to a local one.

Then your router should be appearing in the detectable list of your laptops (and anything else nearby with Wifi cards). Should be easily joined with the router supplying the needed details by DHCP to the laptops.

The wireless cards should detect your routers presence by it's SSID broadcast.

Check both the wireless card and wired connection properties, and see if they're set to a static IP. The router should be using DHCP to give out addresses so there should be no conflict.
