Life time ban from rugby???

Over the weekend I was in my local park watching a great game of rugby, in the Leinster J3 league when a small fight broke out beside a ruck! The play then moved away from the fight.

All players on either team followed the ball except for the 2 players fighting on the ground - an 18st prop and a scrawny winger! The subs on the wingers team then tried to break up the fight as they were worried their team mate was gonna get a serious beating. The subs tried to break up the fight and pulled away both players.

As this was happening the props team mate came running from nowhere and jumped with both feet towards the opposition team subs head. I swear this is no exaggeration, it was like something you would see Jakie Chang do!!!!

The ref then sent off Jakie Chang and called the match off a few mins later as a mass brawl broke out! He then sent the match report to the Leinster Branch and as far as I know the ref is gonna recommend a life time ban!

What do you think the appropriate punishment should be????

Life time ban is the right call. There is no excuse for that.

Ref is bang on, no place for that kind of behaviour in rugby.

Easy decision for the referee. That is completely intolerable.

Ban from interaction with other humans.

I can assure you that this is the whole truth and needs to be brought to the attention of all rugby players!! This sort of behavior is unacceptable and should be stamped out by the IRB and IRFU!!!

I don't think anybody is denying that.

This thread has suddenly become hostile and I'm not quite sure why.

Unneccessary posts removed. Keep this thread to the facts, and it'll be fine. Any naming of players who have not recieved disciplinary action from the IRFU with such info being made public will result in a ban.

I too saw this event unfold, it was shocking stuff. It was similar to the Eric Cantona flying kick incident. Surely a life ban once the referee hands in his report. Thankfully the IRFU are attempting to crack down on these incidents and seeking to remove the the thug element within the game at junior levels.

Well first up, I would 100% support the referee. I have reffed a few J3 and J4 games this year and they can be very tricky. No touch judges, no sighting commissioner, over zealous fans who don't always know the laws, unfit players with hangovers - things can get messy very quickly. The branch and IRFU have to come down strongly on this. Rugby is a tough physical game.
We all know there's a line that can't be crossed, otherwise injuries would accentuate greatly. That incident isn't anywhere near the line, it's a case of GBH.

The safer we can make the game, the more people we get playing.

Minimum ban of five years from all Rugby grounds.

anything involving feet to heads (especially with studs) when the opposition is on the ground should result in legal action.
i have no problem with the odd punch or wrestling match on the ground as we all know it's a physical game, but what you described goes beyong any sort of sporting aggression.a very very hefty ban and reported to the police.

Poor Flannery would be in a bit of bother then.

Incidentally, foul play is already subject to legal action. It is against the laws of rugby, and therefore not part of the game. There was a thread about this regarding a Welsh amateur player I think.

So *your* that dodgy ref who keeps stealing games from us then :p

TBH as a J4 player, you will get handbags here and there in games. Its part of a physical game like that. But there is no place for savagery like that described above..

Was the lad that got kicked actually hurt? Hurt badly?

I definitely think that kind of violence is a civil case/matter for the courts. Some reasonable people seem to go bananas on the rugby pitch.

I played in a game where a guy did this. Everyone stepped aside and he ended up hurt. The fight roke up as we all pissed ourselves laughing at the idiot. No-one shed a tear (even his own team). Anyway down herein NZ not sure age of J4 but while he deserves a hefty ban, I don't like the idea of banning junior players for life (except possibly for attacking ref). How many of us a far different people when we are 20 than 16?

As an aside, if I had been ref'ing I would have cited the subs as well for coming onto field. May have been trying to break it up but subs or spectators coming onto the field always escalates the situation.

Junior club rugby refers to the level, not the age of the players.

    Perhaps :-)
Seriously the amount of games I have reffed this year where teams are relatively even and the winner comes down to who has the better discipline both with the ref and each other.

When teams argue a decision with each other or with the ref, they have no defensive line and can be ripped apart fairly easily. So there's no point arguing 50 - 50 calls.

If I was coach, I would have drill whereby there was a dummy ruck, a whistle blown for penalty and the line had to all walk backwards and form a defensive line a.s.a.p.

It just seems so many teams want to blame refs, but why don't teams learn how to best react to decisions from a tactical perspective?

abomb you need to get you facts stright before you post.the game was a j2 match played on a private pitch with no public access and unless you are 12 foot tall or can see through walls stop sturing and let the branch sort this out

There is no "sturring" going on here. All the facts in the OP are completely factual. If you would like to state otherwise I would love to hear it! If you are associated with the team involved surely you will offer a public apology? No? Surely you dont condone this sort of thing?
Also I'm sure the branch will sort this out and a life ban will be issued. After the match I spoke to the ref and he said he would be stressing the seriousness of this inncident and that his recomendation would indeed be a life ban.
