Windows Mobile 6 - Must Have Apps?

So I finally (a month after I ordered it) got my new shiny HTC Touch Cruise this morning. Initial impressions are good - it's fast, the touchscreen is very responsive, and the Wireless LAN support is a big plus.

Its running Windows Mobile 6, so are there any recommended apps/tools/games I should get? Any preferred websites to get them from?

    Cheers!

    WOW!!
    You lucky ba$tard. :D
This is the device i've been meaning to get for a while now (just need to get the funds together first :( )
Expansys are doing it for 550 now -cheapest i could find from reputable resellers.
Where did you get yours btw and how much?
Any problems with video playback/general lagging (ie the notorious video driver issue?)

    Anyway sites for WM6 apps:
    1. Commercial apps:
    Try www.handango.com or www.pocketgear.com
    They basically have everything.

    2. For free apps, check out:
    www.pocketpcfreeware.com (best freeware site probably)
    www.freewareppc.com
www.freecabs.de (for cab files- ie you put these files straight on to your device, NO PC NEEDED, so nice and handy)

Depends on what you want but i'd say:

    GPS:
Can't go too far wrong with TomTom imo.

Google maps is always handy to have on your device if you can't use your native satnav software.
Also gives good satellite imagery as well if you need it.
Generally works well with inbuilt GPS so should work no problem with the Touch-Cruise.
    Available on the Google site.

    GUI software:
Spb Mobile Shell is really finger friendly and dramatically cuts down the need for a stylus. For many people it's the first app they install on their WM phones.

    PIM apps:
Agenda Fusion or Pocket Informant If you're interested.
Don't use them much myself TBH

    MP3 player:
I love Mortplayer and it's free- really nice finger-friendly interface, easy to use while driving etc. It's nice and simple to use but also very customisable.

    Movie Player:
TCPMP (aka Betaplayer) plays most movie formats and should play back Youtube files with the flv plugin.

vTap is also a cool little app for searching for videos and Wiki articles online (recommended).

    E-book readers:
Tomeraider 3 is a great e-book reader for reference works. You can put the entire Wikipedia file (1-4gb) on a storage card and read it offline with Tomeraider if you want.
Plenty of other stuff as well that Tomeraider 3 can read e.g encyclopedias/dictionaries/IMDB database/cookbooks/travel guides/manuals etc.

I-silo is a useful reader for medical texts.
    Others swear by Mobipocketreader.

    PDF document reader:
Acrobat reader for Windows Mobile- you may already have it pre-installed on the Touch-Cruise.

    Streaming Radio:
GSPlayer is an MP3 player that will stream radio for you over the internet. The Touch-Cruise has an FM radio though.

    VOIP:
Skype for PocketPC should work ok with the Touch-Cruise's 400mhz processor and HSDPA.

    Email:
Java Gmail app is handy for using Gmail on your device (on the Google site).
The Touch-Cruise should have a Midlet Manager to open up all these Java apps- if not a Midlet Manager is easily downloadable.

Flexmail is a nice slick alternative to Outlook that you might like.

    Browsers:
Opera Mobile (as opposed to Opera Mini) is decent.
Opera Mini is a java app that's free- useful as well.
Netfront is a browser that gives advanced functionality- Shopping and Banking etc.

    RSS readers:
    PocketRSS is decent
Hubdog is for managing podcasts etc.

    TV guide app:
MyTV is a handy free TV guide app that will get channel listings off the internet for UK and Ireland channels.

    Weather:
Fizz Weather is a handy Weather app that gets forecasts off the internet and puts them on your today screen.
Weatherwatcher Mobile is a similar app but it's free.
SunMoon gives you Sunrise/Sunset times- handy.

    Financial:
Currency Converter is a handy free currency converter that'll get rates over the internet for you.

    Travel:
Worldmate Pro is probably worth checking out if you travel.
It can get up-to-date flight times for you over the internet.

Metro: is a nice free app that gives you info on subways/metros/transport systems for cities around the world. You just need to put in a start and destination station and it gives you the route.
Not detailed for Ireland though.

AFAIK though there are a couple of lads working on a similar Dublin Transport app for phones.
    Dorsh does Dart info.

    Productivity:
Softmaker is a proper Office Suite (as opposed to the native one).
It includes Textmaker and Planmaker- basically proper Word and Excel on a phone.

PocketSlides is a proper Powerpoint app for your phone (again as opposed to the crap native powerpoint app).

Tracking software if your phone is ever lost or stolen:
MobileJustice will tell you where your phone is if it's lost or stolen using the GPS built into the Touch-Cruise (even if sim card is changed)
Just pinpoint its latitude/longitude with MobileJustice, knock on the thief's door and ask for your phone back... or something ;)
    Very cool app though.

    Call simulator:
Calljockey: Handy to set up fake incoming calls to get out of boring meetings etc.

Also if you go into the "Settings, networks, general info..." sticky above, you'll find a link to "Best 3rd party Applications" at the bottom of the page.
    Might be useful. :)

    Edit:
Check out PocketPC magazine and PDA essentials (they do a free disc of apps every month) to get to know about more WM6 apps.

    Agree with previous post!
    Lucky you...
Even though htc's ui is greatly improving on wm ui,
spb shell is a must-have...it's such a handy shell-extension, skinnable and very finger-friendly...
And I've just "heard" version 2's available now! Great sreenshots:

nice video demo of mobile shell 2:

Cheers for the links guys - I've already installed the trial version of SPB and it looks and works much better than the default :)

Some other feedback (24 hours on):

First off the phone is fast and responsive - the reported video driver issue doesn't seem to affect it much although I haven't tried video playback yet as I'm waiting on an 8GB MicroSD card to arrive from ebay (about €51 total).

    With the phone you get:
    - A spare stylus
    - Handsfree headset
    - Mains charger
    - USB sync/charge cable
    - 1 Screen protector
    - 1 carry pouch
    - Manuals/CDs etc

For people using similar devices - the phone doesn't have a dedicated hardware Start Menu button (t's accessed through the software/touch screen) but you can program the 4 hardware buttons on the unit (including the ability to launch the Start Menu) from the Settings > Personal > Button menu.

By default these are programmed as:
Button 1 (lower left) - Messaging (Email and SMS)
Button 2 (lower right) - Internet Explorer
Button 3 (lower right side) - Camera
Button 4 (upper left side) - Record

Battery life after 24 hours of fairly intensive use with wireless and bluetooth enabled so far seems pretty good (down about 20%), but I've had it connected to the laptop a fair bit for synching (which charges it at the same time of course).

Wisbar Advance and Wisbar Desktop are great little apps and really improve the whole user experience. I would have dumped my phone along time ago if it were not for them.

O2 have rebranded the Touch Cruise as the XDA Orbit 2 in the UK (minus HTC's nice Home Screen). Someone on the boards here said that its likely to make an appearance in O2 Ireland from April.
Wonder how much it will cost?

P.S Brilliant list of WM6 apps earlier in this thread !!

Actually, Kaiser2000, can you tell me what is the loudspeaker like? Is it loud enough in a moving car to use as a hands-free kit?

Can't imagine the Orbit II being much more expensive than the current Orbit.
Don't know when it'll be released tbh.
FWIW the Orbit II is a more rounded device (much like the Orbit was rounded) compared to their more angular HTC counterparts (HTC Touch-Cruise and p3300 respectively).
