Trying to cancel Fonera/Fon account bad for your health...

Has anyone every tried to cancel his/her Fon membership?
I just tried and it's no fun.

About 18 months ago I sent out my order for a Fonera router as the idea seemed neat.
The device is completely locked down, and didn't work well with my existing network and as I am living in the middle of nowhere, nobody would ever use my public signal. But it's a bit of a waste to run a device 24x7x365 when it is not used, only to be able to have free access elsewhere. I never used that service either.

So after more than a year I decided to cancel my Fon account to get rid of their useless promotion emails.

Well first, they don't have a simple link inside your account where you can cancel. In the faq it mentions I should send a mail to unsubscribe@fon.com

So I did, the answer was surprising:

Either I can send a snail mail letter to their Legal? department or I have to provide a scan of my passport! Including a signed email (whatever that is?)

They also want the router back. (for which I paid 45 euro, 18 months ago, a gross over payment considering what the router is capable off) I couldn't find any mention of this in their terms of usage. As far as I remember the term was a year.

I am now in an email correspondance with them but it has been a long while that a company made it so difficult to quit.

    Any other experiences out there?
