I was thinking of getting a tv tuner for my laptop:

However sometimes I'd like to use rabbit ears for picking up RTE/TV3. I've seen a few threads where people mention that this doesn't really work very well. If you can get a good reception with a normal television in a particular location, does it stand to reason that the reception should be ok for the laptop tuner ?

Nope. I have that device and generally good reception on my regular TV. I can get a signal resembling a yeti in a snowstorm with the rabbit's ears. Utterly useless.

I even bought a booster amplifier thingy to no avail.

    Thanks for the reply Tom.

Years ago (i.e 2002) I used a WinTV card (not usb - PCI) and rabbit ears so we could watch the world cup in work. It seemed to work fine, though in fairness we were < 2 KM from RTE in Donnybrook.

I wonder why these cards aren't as good as a regualar TV for picking up the signal?

Yeh I'm based in Dublin, that's probably why the reception is so good. Tbh that isn't the exact model I have. I have an Avermedia ExpressCard DVB-T card but I use it with the supplied antenna and get perfect reception.

I meant where in Dublin. Dublin stretches from Balbriggan to Shankill :)
